Eid al-Ghadeer is the anniversary of the Event of Ghadeer, an Islamic event on the 18th of the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah in which the Prophet Muhammad delivered his last sermon.
The following Ayat (verse of the Qur'an was revelead to The Prophet:
"O Messenger! Deliver what has been revealed to you from your Lord; and if you do it not, then you have not delivered His message (at all), and Allah will protect you from the people; (5:67)"
Upon receiving the verse, the Prophet (S) stopped at Ghadeer(the pond of Khum) which was extremely hot. Then he sent for all people who went ahead, to come back and waited until all pilgrims who fell behind, arrived and gathered. He ordered Salman the Persian to use rocks and camel hoods to make a pulpit (minbar) so he could make his announcement. It was around noon time in the first of the Fall, and due to the extreme heat in that valley, people were wrapping their robes around their feet and legs, and were sitting around the pulpit, on the hot rocks.
On this day the Messenger of Allah spent approximately five hours in this place; three hours of which he was on the pulpit. He recited nearly one hundred verses from The Glorious Qur'an, and for seventy three times reminded and warned people of their deeds and future. Then he gave them a long speech
he said: "O Allah! You also may witness." Then he said: 'O my people! Allah is my Mawla and I am mawla of the faithful and I have superior right on and control over their lives. And this Ali is the mawla of all those of whom I am mawla. O Allah! Love him who loves him and hate him who hates him

Mostly Shi'ites celebrate this day, and I was surprised today that even shi'ite zaidys celebrate it too....
Eid Al Ghadeer is the day where the Prophet Muhammed has assigned and positioned his cousin Ali as the next Caliph and Imam.
And this is the belief that separates muslims into sh'ite and sunna. Where shi'ites believe that Ali should be the first Caliph not Abu Bakr ... And shi'ite believe that the ceremonies in choosing abu bakr a caliph instead of Ali is an act of treason, whereas sunnis deny that such thing had happened, eventhough shi'ite provide evidence from their sources scriptures and books plus the evidences from sunni books
Some might question , why such a difference that happened before 1400 years a go has caused such great differences? the answer to that is that the significance and importance relies on who should be followed and from which sources and teachings of islam to take from after the Prophet Muhammad !And from here we see some differences in how shi'ites and sunnis pray.

Muslims have only 2 yearly festivals - Eid-ul-Fitr at the end of Ramadhan and Eid-al-Adha on the 10th of Zul-Hijjah.
Eid al-Ghadeer is an innovated festival that is not in accordance with the Sunnah or way of the Prophet (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
"Whoever invents something in our faith which does not originally exist, has nothing to do with us." (Sahih Muslim)
