Several people are wrong here...
There are actually brain scans that show differences in people with Bipolar disorder compared to others. It is a chemical imbalance in the brain and the scans have shown that receptors (mainly dopamine) don't fire correctly.
Trust me, it's real. People with Bipolar disorder flucuate between episodes of mania and depression. The episodes occur over time and DO NOT change minute to minute. Am epidsode of depression can last weeks, even months.
There are several types of Bipolar Disorder. Bipolar 1, is the classic manic/depressive and is the most severe form.
Bipolar 2 which has been diagnosed alot recently involves only hypomania and depression..the patients never reach full-blown mania.
Meds called mood stabilizers are what is used to treat Bipolar Disorder. The most common being Lithium, Depekote, and Tegratol. Other meds like Lamictal and some of the antipsychotics like Seroquel are being used as well.

Its a mood disorder. You bounce around between moods and even get so elated you think you are a king or Jesus (for some). It occurs because the brain chemicals int he frontal lobe are not coordinating correctly Overfiring the neurons and creating a "frenzy" in the mind.
The function of the frontal lobe is impaired and we become impulsive.
research shows that this increased activity is responsible for the fact that some BP people are geniuses, but cant keep it together...

It's a definition by a committee of psychiatrists to create another diagnosis for their billing bible.
There is no clinical testing to prove that it's a chemical imbalance, in fact there is none for any brain function disorder. It's a hormonal imbalance due to a nutritional deficiency or food allergen.
My opinion is clear... It doesn't exist.
My niece was diagnosed with bi-polar and prescription drugs turned her into a zombie. I got her on a nutritional supplement program and she is living a life of happiness and drug free with no more bi polar symptoms.
Next, we have to work on her mom who has a love affair with her medications. She has had major seizures from drug interaction from properly prescribed drugs which scared her daughter to death. She will only listen when she's ready.
