I fully agree. Pits are very good dogs and it is how they are raised.
There are always several points that the anti-pit people make.
1. They are breed to be dangerous.
Pits were actually breed to be non-people agressive. Any dogs that showed agression towards people were killed. They wanted them to be able to be handled.
2. There are more pit attacks that any other breed.
I have seen studies that have shown this, however, when you read these you have to look at the locations of the attacks. They don't happen in community parks or rich neighbor hoods. The majority happen in very bad areas. Areas with high crime rates and drug use. And the criminals like agressive mean looking dogs, and because of the breed history, they choose pits, rots, etc. So, could it be that the reason we hear more about agressive pits it because more people who want agressive dogs, choose these breeds more than others? Meaning that its the people not the dogs.
Any dog can be trained to be mean. From pits to min pins or poodles. If you give a dog a loving home then you will have a well socialized loving dog.....if you don't,then you dog will be one of the ones you hear about on tv. Its all about the owner.....Good owners mean good dogs, bad owners mean bad dogs.

Sorry pitbulls are dogs that are always in the news. Also your articles mentions some things that does make them seem dangerous. All dogs in my opinion are dangerous b/c one minute they are nice and the next they turn on you. I have experienced it with other dogs that were quite taken care of. The owner even admitted the dog was temperamental and I saw it one day. I say this you love your dogs great but keep them on a leash around people. Don't ever assume everyone will love your dog or they will love that person back. I have had many people say my dog is sweet and it won't do anything thing to you to have the dog try to bite me when the owner's back is turned. Sometimes the dog would get aggressive when the owner was looking and they would still say the dog will not harm me. I know cause a playful dog does not bare its teeth and growl. I get people love dogs but be respectful of others.
To the person below I am speaking from experience so I am not ignorant. It is my opinion. I have been chased and nearly knocked down by dogs of all kinds from the time I was a child because owners said my dog won't do you anything and leave the dog behind even though it was getting aggressive. Or the owner does not secure the dog enough inside its own yard. Many times I was just walking in the street or on my own front porch. I lived in countryside areas. Dogs are animals and when those animal instincts kick in whoever is on the receiving end better watch out. Some dogs get territorial for whatever reason especially if owners are around. That is why I say all dogs are dangerous not just pits. When those instincts kick in I have seen many well trained dogs ignore their owners. I said pitbulls are on the news b/c that is the truth. That is the reason they have a bad rep. The original poster is right it is not only pits but they do have more frequent deadly attacks because like rottweilers they go for the jugular.

You really don't want to read these FACTS, but they need to be known, as well.
In the 6-year study published in the medical journal PEDIATRICS (Vol.97 No. 6, 891-5), Jeffrey J. Sacks, M.D. and associates reported the finding of 109 bite-related fatalities. They found that 57% of the deaths were in children under 10 years of age. 22% of the deaths involved an unrestrained dog OFF the owner's property. 18% of the deaths involved a restrained dog ON the owner's property, and 59% of the deaths involved an unrestrained dog ON the owner's property.
The researchers also found that 10% of the dog bite attacks involved sleeping infants.
The most commonly reported dog breeds involved were pit bulls (24 deaths), followed by rottweilers (16 deaths), and German shepherds (10 deaths). The authors point out that many breeds, however, are involved in the problem.
THIS ONE FROM THE CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL 2002.
At least 25 breeds of dogs have been involved in 238
human DBRF during the past 20 years. Pit bull-type
dogs and Rottweilers were involved in more than half of
these deaths.
I love ALL dogs, and would risk my life to save any of them..However, as a pit bull attacked my toddler, un-provoked, I will never TRUST another pit bull..
Yes, I am one of those ignorant people..when I am walking with my grand daughter, I will cross the street if a pit bull is coming..I also cross the street when walking with my pups, as too many of the pit bulls have threatened them, just as they are passing by, and I don't want my show pups to be afraid or intimidated by any dogs..

These are the only facts I need to know-
One day I was walking down the street with my dog when she was a puppy, out of nowhere comes a pit bull with his owner hot on his trail. The pit bull runs up to my dog who hasn't done anything and aggressively tries to bite her repeatedly. Thank God the owner was able to get there and pull his dog off before he got a good bite on my dog. Since then, I don't want to have anything to do with the breed. When drug dealers and dog fighters start favoring Labradors, maybe I won't want to have anything to do with them either.

My Pit bull, Princess sleeps on the couch, eats table scraps, trys to attack the vaccum cleaner, plays catch with my son and will try to eat you alive if you break into our house in the middle of the night but if I open the door and let you in, she will wag her tail and wait to be patted.
Pit bulls are loving dogs who protect thier house and the people in it. If you train them right they are as harmless as most other breeds. Unfortunatly people who train them to fight have given them a bad rap. My dog would NEVER attack some random person on the street. She may bark from our yard but if I have her on the leash walking, you don't need to cross the st. The most she is going to do is sniff you out.
PIT BULLS RULE!

You're absolutely correct.
However, these dogs and a few other species are targeted for "special" treatment.
If you get a dog from the pound, you don't know if that dog has been trained or abused to hurt people.
I don't want anyone of my family or any other pets to find out the hard way.

I agree with you completely, we are happy American Pit Bull Terrier owners. That said you really need to be careful how you word your question, because there are going to be people who say it isn't a question and your using YA inappropriately, that its more of a info for your cause sort of thing (not me, but there are those that will)
And to Ravid above me, people attack more people in one hour than dogs do in decades. People are the problem, improper training, abuse, etc all lead to these problems with any dog. People are on the news all the time too. Flip on the news and it's full of people who are rapists, murders, molesters, violent, etc. Are you going to label all people as bad because people are in the news???? Your point doesn't even make sense it's a blanket excuse for your ignorance about dogs.

Don't blame the media. We (I am a reporter) only report news - facts about things that happen. It is the fighters - the thugs - who fight these dogs and raise them to fight and be vicious t hat CAUSE them to maim and kill, and that makes the news.
I have a pit and have had many. They are wonderful dogs, sweet tempered, but like many other breeds, can be vicious if raised in the wrong environment.
They are big powerful dogs, LIKE OTHER BREEDS, and can cause more severe damage or kill quiicker thank ankle biter breeds. Therefore they are deemed "dangerous."
My pit sleeps with my dachshunds and rat terrier, lives in peace with my free-range chickens, and doesn't bother the cats because the tomcat taught him a lesson. He is muscular and powerful and COULD hurt someone badly, but just doesn't have it in him because he was raised with love. Blame the thugs, not the media and certainly not the dog breed.

Fact: These dogs are bred to kill other dogs. Most breeds of dog will get the other dog to submit then the fight is over. Not the pit bull, these fight until the other dog is dead. This is what makes them dangerous.
I agree they are very loyal and loving to there own family pack. But to anyone else they are not! They are dog aggressive!
They have a dangerous mental attack mode by going for the throat! Fact, fact and fact - These dogs are dangerous when not socialised well, CAN YOU GUARANTEE ALL THESE DOGS ARE SOCIALISED WELL?

I love pit bulls. They are gorgeous, sweet dogs. My friend has 2 huge ones, and they live with two young children, 3 ferrets, and 3 smaller dogs...all inside.
I agree that it is the person who raises them that makes any dog mean. You can make a chihuahua viscous.
