I am THRILLED that I have yet again done the right thing and neutered my 6-month old Australian Shepherd!!
He can now join the ranks of responsible canine citizens, and will never be able to cause more litters to be born!
He is purebred, with a tail, and has great lineage, oh, and he is SO cute! But that still is not enough for me to breed him.
He will be an Agility superstar in USDAA Agility, just you watch.
And I guarantee his being altered will never interfere with his success.
So now I have 9 dogs, all altered, who are champions in their own way.
This little guy is simply amazing.

To anyone who is even thinking about breeding their dog, and I am not talking to those with championed AKC dogs, you need to consider why you are doing it. Simply for the "cuteness" factor?
Well consider how much better it would feel to have a healthy dog, who will never risk impregnating a female! Truly responsible sounds better than utterly wreckless.

So, tell me, why am I so damn happy??

To whppt-
You obviously do not know what you are doing. You have no clue as to the positive/negative aspects of altering when it comes to agility or any performance event. You probably have no experience in dog anatomy and that there are far more pros than cons when it comes to altering your dog. You are one of the ignorants when it comes to altering, the kind that worry us in the world of performance dog events.
Please do some more research.
If you really want an ideal performing dog, agility competitor, or any other dog, you will alter that dog and see the difference.
The only dogs that should not be altered are of course show dogs and breeding studs/bitches which have their championship.
All other dogs and their owners are irresponsible.
I have been running USDAA agility with 21 dogs for over 12 years, and all of them have been altered.
I have also been showing for 13 years and know the difference of how a dog performs altered or not.
I hope you do the right thing from now on.

The feeling is because you have beat the odds, and done the right thing. AND you know that ALL certified service dogs ( Police K9s, Guide dogs, hearing dogs, etc. ) are neutered/spayed, so they are so much more reliable and easier to focus on training! your dog is already on his way to being a super star!

Good for you!!! We have a chocolate labs, and we spayed our girl from field lines and she is my obedience superstar. We were new to the breed when we got her, had a male already that we intended to show (and do...) and we didn't want puppies, and spayed her. She is fantastic. I was a novice to the sport and she and I are working hard together...I am proud we managed our CD, RN, WC, CGC, working on CDX and RA now.

People really need to sit down and think about what they want from a dog. If you interest is only as far as a pet....spay/nueter. If you are only into performance events with no plans on ever breeding....spay/nueter. If you have hopes to become a breeder and show your dogs, that's fine too, but realize that it's ALOT of work, you still have to title your dogs and SPEND LOTS of money on health certifications.

You did the right thing, thats why. You are a responsible owner and that makes you one of the few great people of this world. YOU RULE!

I was trilled to have my kitty neutered, for the fact that he will not participate in breeding, but also because he was a pain in my a** and he has calmed down....slightly.

Way to go- keep up the great work.

Congrats on doing the right thing! Wish more people were like you and were responsible owners. I've bet you've noticed a positive change in his behavior as well! As an animal shelter worker, i can't thank you enough :)

Considering that neutered dogs have less muscle mass and are more likely to have performance related injuries (especially ACLs), I have no idea why you would be happy.

Dogs neutered young, like yours, also tend to get very leggy and lack bone, as well as muscle mass, again making them more prone to injury.

You said - "consider how much better it would feel to have a healthy dog, who will never risk impregnating a female!"

Neutered dogs are 4 X's as likely to get bone cancer, one of the most common cancers in dogs. So maybe healthy, maybe not.

Impregnating a female is not a risk unless you are an irresponsible owner. It is not difficult to prevent accidental breedings.

Really not sure why you would be so happy about it.

Because your gay.... I am sorry you left it out there. Getting you dog snipped is the right thing to do. Male dogs are better pets afterwards.

I truly have no idea why you are happy!

Didn't you know that ignorance is bliss! So, all of the ignorant people out there, breeding Puggles, and Lhasa shih must be the happiest people on earth!

So, you, my friend, should be miserable as heck! You are obviously not ignorant, so something else must be at work here!
