When someone is arrested, It is silly to continually ask if it is "OK". Why not just say "do you understand ?" It is as if they are asking the person if it is "OK" to arrest them.... Of course it is not "OK". Is it just a way look down on the suspect ? or is it a very bad habit ?

cops do ask if you if you understand. if you do not concent that you understand no information you give to police can be used in court. if a cop arrests you and only asks if it's ok if he does so, he's a very bad cop or very lazy and nothing you say can be held against you ina a court of law.
when they ask " is it OK if i look in your trunk" there really just setting you up. if you say no, then that's reasonable suspicion and they can call in for a warrant if they need too, and if you say yes they can just open it. of course if your under a arrest they can just open it. cops have all kinds of crazy tricks, words are powerful things, they will try and trick you any chance they get, they are extremely exprienced and usually affective at their jobs

The overuese of OK is a bad habit that many have, not just ploice. After reading Miranda Rights, police do ask if one understands the rights as read to them.
Thereis no implied insult in the use of the word, OKAY or Is That OKAY?

It is a bad habit. The term OK is ment to be in the context of do you understand. The Miranda rights state "Do you understand these rights as I have read them to you?" Lazy cops say ok to mean the same thing

Many cops if not most, DO ask that question... If you watch any of the TV programs that feature Cops arresting people, most ask that question. And it's part of the Miranda recitation. "Do you understand these rights as I have explained them to you?"

I guess, when put this way, it does seem silly to use the word okay...I wouldn't think it would be "ok" to get arrested...but then again, I'm just not into handcuffs anyway....

The overuse of the word "OK" is just a bad habit that a lot of people have. I doubt it's meant to disrespect anyone.

Sapce monkey almost nailed it. If they say "is it ok" and you say "yes", you just consented to a search and lost any illegal search and seizure argument. It's not an accidental or casual question. It's a set-up.

i think "do you understand?" is used plenty, and "ok" is probably something oversaid, sure. in the heat of the moment you rely on old habits, like saying "like" or "um" when you're nervous...or something.
