Someone recently told me that if you put rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball and put it on your belly button then your fever will go down.

That same person also told me that if you put a lime in your belly button it will do something else.

The person who told me this was a nurse. I've heard this before, but...where did she get this? What's the reasoning behind it?

This is hilarious. I also suspect if you put peanut butter and jelly on you ankles you fever will go down, not to mention you will get a lot more attention from your dog.

Most of these type of remedies are based on observation. Once a person put an alcohol soaked gauze in the belly button. Because alcohol is very volatile it evaporated quickly, making the person belly button feel cooler. They then recheck the person's temperature had fallen. Therefore they concluded that the alcohol in the belly button caused the persons temperature to go down.

Here is the reality. Our temperature varies constantly based upon a variety of factors including environment, illnesses, activity etc. If you check you temperature every 1/2 hour through the day you will find there is quite a bit of variability. What happened here is someone observed a natural variation in temperature and attributed it to the alcohol on the cotton ball. This was reinforced by the cooling sensation from the alcohol evaporation. But the alcohol did not cause the person's temperature to fall.

Haha. When I read the first part I thought this was going to be about body shots.

I've never heard those myths though. You'd be better off putting some tequila in there.
