Usually in real life i'm sure everyone is pretty respectful to others. It's just here on the Y!A site they don't have to be. They can be crass, smartmouthed, and rude all they want.

God bless,
=)

Regardless of what your religion, or lack thereof, those kind of beliefs cut to the heart of a person. It is the basis of our character, it helps us make very important decisions, and we hang our hats on the fact that we are right. Sometimes, to assure oneself that our beliefs are right, we are willing to defend it to the death, which, for the most part, isn't necessary. I am a Christian. Yes, I believe that there is a heaven and hell. I believe that Jesus is the only way. I believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God and it's not just a book of types and shadows. Now, do I feel intimidated that you don't believe that? No. Do I wish that you did? Yes. Am I going to hit you over the head with my big Bible? No. Will I share it with you if you ask? Yes. I can spout all the scripture that you would ever want to hear, but it will be no good if my treating of you is callous, condemning, condescending, etc. I say show people what you believe by the way you live. I've been able to share the Lord with many more people just because I was nice to them. Think about it.

I think that the real friction is caused when people try to tell other people how to live. Religious people can be easily antagonized when people mock their faith, and atheists are antagonized when people quote religious verse or sayings in place of rational argument. Atheists claim moral superiority through rational analysis, religious folks claim it through faith. A healthy debate has its virtue, and I think that religion and logic are not mutually exclusive, but many people feel very passionately that faith is to NEVER be questioned. Some atheists love to provoke these persons because it proves their point; that religion can create extremists who are beyond reasoning. Religious extremists in turn try to portray the atheists as the devil's earthly agents (giving the atheists a good chuckle).

Honestly, both groups fear that one will someday wipe out the other...sinful society unchecked will overwhelm the earth (a la Sodom and Gomorrah), or on the other hand, a religious police state (the Taliban being an example).

In some parts of the world christians of different denomination still kill each other over differences in faith (Northern Ireland, for example). In the U.S., thankfully, most friction lies between christians and atheists and is confined to verbal battles and trying to make the other group look stupid, immoral or both. Debate is healthy but arguing is unhealthy. Most people don't have the tact or wit to have a proper debate, and respond to provocatory comments with statements that demonstrate their own prejudices and mistaken beliefs.

Faith cannot be proven or disproven, it simply is. People should not go around judging others and telling people how to live, they should lead by example. But they don't. Atheists shouldn't go around provoking people of faith for no reason. Why? Because it leads to a happier society when people are tolerant of one another. Being a good example is a lot harder than being a riotous fool, and most arguments do not change people's minds. Instead it only further entrenches them into their respective positions. A person who is truly righteous does not need to justify their faith. An atheist who harasses people of faith gains nothing in return, by their own admission. Unfortunately, many people cannot resist an opportunity to tell other people how to live.

It's called piling on.

I'm an atheist, too, but I've asked respectful questions about religion that at times sound like they're coming from a believer. I receive the same negative stuff, but I just ignore it.

I also get vitriol from Christians when I ask an obviously skeptical question.

No one has the corner on arrogance.

i think of there are a number of secular people who could desire to call themselves Christians purely while mandatory yet who're rather atheists. i think of possibilities are impossible to comprehend. i've got faith even Churchgoing inhabitants has an significant proportion of atheists. it rather is going to consistently be that way, as many people pick the path of least resistance while coping with fundies.

This reveals that God is who he is...I think(don't hit me) that most athiests want to pick on Christians because Christians (true ones anyways) are the essence of God's goodness and His heart, in all of His Sovereignty they represent His righeousness because they are His children...and a natural man being born rebelling against God (by nature)...an athiest still stuck in his natural state might do this...in short, spiritually something happens and it is God's enemies hating God but it reveals that God does in fact exist and man is naturally born an enemy of God and it reveals that God is a representation of goodness and an enemy of evil...and most atheists don't want God around because they want to continue doing whatever it is that they are doing, living life by their own wisdom, on their own terms...submitting to their own wills..

That's a very good question. We Christians are picked on by not only Atheists but Muslims, Hindus, etc.. You name the religion, they all want more rights than Christians. They all just want us to shut up and go away because they don't want our truth.
