No, Peter, I would not be angry. Most people, if an effort is made, can find a means of communication in the short term. If one is going to live in a foreign land, then it makes good common sense to attempt to learn the language of the land you are living in.

Not at all. I travelled extensively to different countries where I didnt know their language and they didnt get angry at me because of that.
We cannot be so narrow minded. Being angry with a tourist because he/she does not speak English tells a lot about the parrochial mentality of some people.

NO! I've seen people come here as tourists and they don't speak english only when they're talking amongst their families. Most of them can speak English and do so when speaking to someone who speaks English. How ignorant can you get?

Not if he's a tourist. I lived in Florida and came across people from all over the world. My German came in handy then. We weren't mandated to speak another language but it was surprising how many other languages people knew and they all stepped in when needed. Including sign language. Most people took another language in school so we aren't "only know English."...but it is this countries common language and it doesn't hurt knowing another language.....I just don't want Spanish crammed down my throat.

No, I wouldn't get angry. I'd feel sorry for a tourist who didn't speak English because too few Americans know a 2nd language. Many tourists go to countries where they don't speak the language. I wouldn't deny myself the pleasure of Italy because I don't speak Italian. I'd hire a guide.

A tourist? Heavens no.
I have personally participated in many rounds of sign language with people I was trying to help who didn't speak English.
Airports are a common place for this problem, but most Americans are happy to help.
However, if you want to live and work here, you need to learn English.

Why ask? Americans are one of the few countries where people don't speak at least one other language and for the most part they are treated well. People come to the US? They are tourists and odds are even if they don't speak English (a rarity) they at least try to learn a few phrases. Something most americans do not.

No, why? I went to Russia, Poland, Hungary and Mexico as a tourist, and I do not speak more than a few sentences of each of their languages.
However, if I planned to move to any of those countries, I would learn the language.

Frustrated maybe, but I don't think I would be angry at a tourist. However, what makes me mad are all the people who LIVE in our country and don't speak our language, and actually want us to make special provisions for them and their language (mainly Spanish). Many years ago, I took my SAT in Miami, Fl and I went to a fast food place where no one in the establishment spoke English!! That to me is crazy. You live in America, you should speak English!

No I wouldn't be mad. That's like people in China getting mad cuz I'm visiting there country and I cant speak Chinese. That would be unreasonable to ask all tourist. If that was a must then nobody would ever leave there own country.
