In the US, if you are playing games at a baby shower, the prize typically goes to the guest. The mother will typically be receiving a lot of gifts from the guests so she will be leaving with her fair share of things for the new baby.

If you would like to have it so that the mother gets a "prize" from the game too, you can do that by picking the proper game. For example, you can get 20 or so pairs of baby socks (assorted colors and sizes) and throw them into a pile. Each guest has to sort and match the socks correctly and they are timed with a stopwatch. The guest who does this in the shortest amount of time wins the prize! When the game is over, the mom-to-be gets all the socks for the new baby!

Another game is "remember what is on the tray". You place 20-25 items on a tray that are baby related ... diaper, bottle, pacifier, bib, safety pin, baby powder, baby spoon, etc. You bring the tray out and have all the guest look at it for about 45 seconds. At that point you take the tray away and everyone has to write down as many things as they can remember from the tray. The guest who remembers the most items wins the prize. And the mom-to-be gets to have all the goodies that were on the tray!

These types of games make it fun for both the mom-to-be and the guests.

I believe that the point of "winning" a prize is so that you actually won something and get to keep it. Thus, I believe the guest should keep the gift. Why would you have someone win a box of diapers or something else that is obviously for the mom-to-be? Why not just give them to her? That is pretty silly, if you ask me. Prizes at showers are sort of like the little favors only extra special for the winners. I truly think any other method is simply tacky and a grab for more gifts.

I've never even heard of the mother to be getting all the prizes. The winner should get the prize. While the focus of the day is on the mother to be, it's a social event for all the guests too. The guests bring presents for the new mum so that should be enough. Make the prizes expensive chocolates or something like that that's good for everyone whether they've got kids or not.

Okay, this is an old fashioned ettiquette issue that is really quite charming in it's origin.
At any type of shower honoring someone in which prizes are "won" as part of a game, the winner of the prize then gets the added honor of "bestowing" the prize onto the honoree as an additional gift.

It is still a prize for you in that you are allowed to express even more generosity towards the guest of honor.

That is how it was intended. That is what ettiquette deems proper.

Your hostess can clarify this by giving prizes that are obviously for the honoree (baby linens or clothing). If you are still unsure, simply ask your hostess ahead of time to avoid embarassing yourself. Although, I cannot understand why anyone would want to leave a shower for someone else with a "prize".

To the guest that won. NO one expects these prizes to be huge ones!!! But it is a nice token at the shower....and mom is already getting the lions share of the gifts that day!!!

I have done lots of research on this and haven't found a set answer. A lot of it depends on the area that you are from and the traditions of the family and friends. But I am a big believer that the prizes should go to the mother. We usually use little things that the mother will need such as bottle brushes, safety covers etc. However, we do send every guest home with a small party favor such as a candle.

Prizes go to the winner of the game. Make the prizes something anyone could use.
