My 9 year old nephew gets sent to bed at 7pm every night at the same time as his four year old sister. This isn't go up and read, it's strictly lights out at 7pm.

I think this is way to early for a boy his age? What do you think?

He starts school at 9am just across the road from his house.

He has no naps in the day.

And my sister in law is a good enough friend for us to chat about things like this. I hadn't decided if I was right or wrong which is why I asked here! She's a very good Mum but I think might be wrong on this one.

No later than 8 pm. If you have issues with how your brother/sister is parenting their children. You should keep your thoughts to yourself unless you want to cause drama. Unless you walk in their shoes its best to not say anything. They have their reasons maybe its best for the child to sleep. Or maybe its best for the parents so that they can have adult time or time to themselves. When you have children then you can make those decisions when they are yours. Children need structure and routine. You should respect your families rules for their children. Opinions are like butt holes and sometimes shouldnt be expressed. But you asked.

Yes I agree, 7 is way too early for a boy of 9. My little boy is only 6 months old and even doesn't go to bed until 7.30!

I think for a 9 year old 9pm is perfect, or 8pm with an hour of TV or reading in bed to wind down is just as good (if not better).

The 4 year old and the 9 year old should not be going to bed at the same time, the age gap is just too wide it is not far on the older one at all.

Well it depends. Does he have a hard time getting up in the mornings? How much sleep does he require to have a "good day". Some children need anywhere from 8-10 hrs of sleep so they aren't so grouchy. My son is 6 and is put to bed at 7:30. He has 30 minutes to read or watch a short cartoon but at 8 that is it, lights off.

I send all three of my boys to bed at 8. They are 7, 4, and 2. I will be allowing my 7 year old to stay up to 9 on school nights when he is 8. But honestly I think it depends on how hard it is to get him up in the morning for school, and how he acts during the day. I do think that 7 for a 9 year old is a little harsh.

Around 8:30 or 9:00 at the latest on a school night. Maybe 10 on a Friday or Saturday night.

It's probably so the little one won't complain about it, or so that his parents only have to cope with one bedtime struggle per night.

I think my bedtime was 8:00 or 8:30 when I was 9. However, I have known 14-year-olds with a 10:00 bedtime.

It may also be dependent on how early kids have to wake up for school in the morning.

Absolutely. He would be waking up at about 3 AM. School doesn't start until 9 AM. Nobody needs six hours to get ready, let alone a 9 year old running around the house at three in the morning.

seems early to me. My 5 yr old nephew goes to bed at like 8-8:30. I'd say 9 would be a good time for a 9 yr old, assuming he didn't have problems waking up on time for school the next day.

That's insane. Sounds like the parents just want him out of the way. Kids that age need about 10 hours of sleep. My 8 year old goes to bed at 9 PM and wakes up at 7AM for school.

I think that is way early for both of them.. I am a mother of 5 and i try to put them to bed between 8 and 9. But always by 9. i think this is a decent time for a older child. But if one has trouble with getting up for school i might try to shoot for 8.
