The day after Thanksgiving I had to run out for my girlfriend for some milk, now I know it was stupid because I didn't have my license, it was suspended. I was pulled over because the officer said her plate wasnt visible, in which she had a temperary tag which was in the lower left hand side of the vehicle, plainly visible. None the less he gave me a ticket for driving on a suspended license and let me drive home. I now have my license back and have gotten a lawyer. My court date is comming up soon, what should I expect? This all happened in Michigan

In Michigan, if convicted you could face up to a $500 fine, plus an addition $500 for the next two years under the Driver Responisibility Act. It will also be at least 4 points on your driving record (which will fall off of the record in three years).

Forget the visible thing. The issue is your suspension. The fact that the cop let you drive home says that you are not too bad off. If you are suspended for fines and such make an effort to take care of that. Showing up in court showing that you tried will make all of the differnce in the world. If the court directly suspended you they may get you for jail time that was suspended the first time around. But....... if you just recieved a suspension in the mail they have to show that you directly recieved the letter in your hands, otherwise you can say you didn't know. Most common way to get off and get it reduced.

In Michigan, the law provides for prison up to 5 years, $1000-$5000 fine, or both. You definitely need a good lawyer. A lot depends on the judge.

1. shocked you got your license back, normally they hold them till the court date.

2. expect to have them re-suspended most likely with a fine. could even be told to go to a driving class to watch video's.

3. NEVER drive the last week of your suspended license as this is when you will get caught. At 18 I lost mine and got caught the last week of suspension 4 times in a row. friends finally locked me in my apartment the last week of no.5 just to ensure I got them back.

You can expect a hefty fine and a possible revocation of your license, unless your lawyer can convince the judge the officer who stopped you had no probable cause. If your lawyer can do that, you may beat the charge altogether.
