I had one that last 9 days a month or so ago but I think smoking aggrivated it. I would say more then a week with fever or other significant symptoms would be more then enough reason to see a doc. If the fever is high and you feel crappy in other ways you really should get seen sooner.

It depends what kind of a sore throat it is. Check the back of your throat. If you see white irritation, thats a good sign that it might be strep throat. If you see bulges at the side of your throat, it could be tonisilitis. If I had a sore throat that lasted any longer than a week I would go see a doctor.
