A 1971-1973 Mustang Mach 1 w/ the 351 Cleveland if possible. They are not all that expensive yet, and certainly would fit the midlife crisis better than a new minivan. You want to look like you are going fast even when sitting still, and have a V8 that can be heard and felt from a block away. The later models got heavier and emissions took away a lot of power. I think 1971 is the last year they had any real power in that body style. Of course do some research as to what model you want. A good one is not likely to lose value like a new car will. And insurance can be really cheap on antique cars. I personally kind of like the Camaro's more, but a poor slob cannot afford a good one any more.
If you are thinking a tad more modern:
1990's Nissan 300ZX (nice looking car)
1990's Toyota MR2 (poor mans Ferrari)
1990's Lexus SC 300/400 (more luxurious)
1990's Porsche Boxster ($$ to fix though)
1990's Subaru SVX (really rare, and a tad more unusual)

Joshua W is absolutely right - for a proper mid-life crisis car go for a Mazda RX-8. That's what I did and I'm grinning like an idiot every time I sit in it, look at it and especially drive it.
They are not overly expensive to buy (cheaper than cars with the same sort of spec and there are a lot of good used ones about now if your budget is tight) but they are a bit thirsty on petrol (they do not burn as much oil as they say - about 1 litre every 1500 to 2000 miles, but it should be checked regularly). If you can live with that every drive will be fun and make you feel young again. As well as the fun sporty bit (choice of 190 or 230 bhp revving to 7500 or 9000 rpm respectively - recommended you take it up to the top of the rev range at least once every journey) and the head-turning good looks, you also get really cool 'suicide' back doors and it seats 4 adults cosily, but all comfortable.
Go and test drive one - keep revving until it beeps at you before you change up to the next gear - you will be finding the money and putting a deposit down immediately.

Mid life crisis? It kind of depends on what your budget is, and what kind of car/vehicle you are looking for. For the normal mid life crisis sports car person, I would go with a Mazda RX-8. Very cool car.
If you want to go the old school route and put some work into a car, an old Camaro (1960's) is always nice.
If you want more of the off road mid life crisis, a Toyota 4-Runner is a good option.
Good Luck!

You never say your budget but something mad and cheap. How about a Pontiac trans am / Chevrolet camaro? These can be picked up for 2 to 4 k Get one 1992 or earlier and get Classic car insurance! 5.7 litre V8 knocking out 250bhp/350lbft torque and 6 second 0-60 with a soft top or t top will cost you more in road tax than to insure. 25mpg is realistic and parts that, for the majority are cheaper than your humble escort!

a second hand Mini without a doubt
the new one's just out so the old one (which largely looks the same) will be affordable. The base version of the new Cooper is 19'000 dollars or so.
it's a great car to drive, corners like it's on rails, 118hp and a not bad 8.5 seconds 0 to 60.
it's small so it'll make you feel like you're young again (it still has 4 seats though).
(it's probably better suited to an urban / suburban environment, than to some rough coutry side).
enjoy

Buy a smart car roadster! They're great. I have a smart car and I love it! It zooms around all over the place and it makes people smile. Plus, no one ever expects you to overtake them, the look on their faces when you do is priceless! Totally worth the price of the car, which is pretty good considering how much some cars cost.

Buy japanese, or german, The japs make cheap and super reliable cars, the germans super reliable but costly. Most other cars made by america or france, etc are usually rubbish and won't last much longer than 6yrs from new

Do what I did. A sports car for the "I'm better looking and faster than you are" ego. And do not forget to get a lifted crew cab 4x4 truck for the "I'm bigger and stronger than you are" ego .
That way the only resulting crisis is the payments.
