thanks for all the answers, I have a bunch of tattoos and my husband is fully tattood and it usually raises a little bit, but these are thick lines and are very raised and have expanded, that is what kind of freaked me out!

It depends what your using on your tattoo.
It is completely normal for your tattoo to itch and even become raised, Alot of people notice years/months later they're tattoo since get raised every now and then..It taks a long time for your body to accpet the tattoo. I would suggest, not putting any ointments or lotions on it for a few days, i also suggest getting "AQUAPHOR" ointment you can find in any drug store in the lotion aisle. Use a tny bit enough to have a thing layer over your tattoo.
MAKE sure your using lotion that is NON SCENTED and ALCOHOL FREE. same goes for your soaps.
Give it couple days. Let it be and dont itch it or put A&D OR NEOSPORIN on it....
The raising is your body trying to reject the tattoo, acting like an allergic reaction. Im sleeved and tattooed all over, I have several tattoos that still get bumpy and raised from time to time, every tattoo is different, every healing process is different... i hope this puts your mind at ease.

My tattoo did this recently. The outline was raised and it itched like crazy. I looked up possible causes on the internet and all said that it was likely due to an ink allergy. I thought that was not likely as I have had this tattoo for over 8 years. I put some witch hazel on it and it got better in a day or two. I think that it was aggravated by my clothing rubbing against it.

You are not alone i've had a couple of minedo the same and so has my husband. We're not sure why it does that but it has nothing to do with an infection or allergy. Try taking some Benadryl for the itching if it's too bad but don't itch it. Even if it is healed you can still scratch it up by itching to hard being new.
Hope this helps and good luck!

You can develop allergies over time. In fact, most allergies become worse with each subsequent encounter. You should probably rub some hydrocortizone on the area. This should stop the reaction and the itch. When you get a chance see a doctor. Also, next time you go back to that guy you might want to spend a little more on hypoallergenic products.

is it just the outline? or is it just in places? my newest tattoo (on my foot) has healed a little funky. the outline of the lotus is raised but i'm thinking it may go down over time if i can be patient. also when i get my back tattooed it is sometimes itchy for two to three weeks. and also if they are small bumps it could be ingrown hairs which happens on my back because of the new skin. anyway, if you are in doubt go to the tattoo shop and then if they don't have sufficient answers go to a doctor. good luck!

I'm not really sure or a doctor, but I would have to say the deep needle sounds right to me. And the fact, that some of us, including myself, stop using the salve they give you a little too early. The salve with Benodryl in it is used for the main reason to draw out bacteria that may have gotten under your skin by the needle. So, if you stop treatment early, and it closes up and traps some of that, hence the rash. All that said aside, KNOW your artist!

Yup, it happens with a couple of my tatts and they're over twenty years old.
It also happened to a friend of mine. He ended up in hospital with blood poisoning, turned out the cheap SOB that tattooed him had used a toxic carpet dye instead of proper tattoo ink.

Mine itched like crazy for weeks, but that is normal when something is healing and the only raising was the scab.
