Being a former chef and having made them several time if they were soaked before your friend started cooking them it will be 1 -2 hours, if they were not, then 2-3 hours, just make sure the burner or flame is low and they do not boil hard, this will cause the skins on the beans to get tough and take longer to be done.

Stir them occasionally and if they seem to be getting dry add a small amount of liquid, water or tomato juice, but do not let the stick, the burn very quickly.

are you talking about pinto beans, if so then I would say a couple of hours at a pretty high heat. Be sure to add water to them when needed.

First of all....you wash and soak the beans overnight.
Then you boil the crap out of them add more water and then simmer them for a couple of hours.

They should be soft when done. Make sure they have plenty of water - at least covering them. They will burn in a heartbeat and it is a bugger to clean the pan & it smells really bad.

Be patient - it takes a couple of hours, just be sure to keep water in them and don't let them burn! If you want to make them taste better - throw in a can of Rotel
