Can anyone tell me which is the best stain to use, oil-based or water based?

Oil Base.
You want the water to flow OFF the wood not be absorbed into it.

Oil-based paints/stains will soak into the wood so water can't be. If you used a water-based paint, the water would eventually remove the paint.

Oil based I'd say.
