Only if you consumed large portions of lead would you have to worry. Try to avoid eating the pellets in the meat, but you would not be the first to eat one. It would hurt your teeth more than anything. Most hunting except for waterfowl is done with lead shot, and waterfowl is hunted with steel due to the possibility of birds ingesting pellets in the water. As long are you are healthy then lead shot in wildlife would pose little or no problems, like others have said try and remove the shot prior to cooking, and you should be fine. Enjoy

There are no ill effects to humans who consume a small amount of lead. It is not to healthful to the rabbit but that is what they are here for. Eat all you want they are very tasty. Also try Dove and quail.Lead shot is used all the time except in duck hunting then it is steel. Enjoy your hunting and take your kids with you it is a great time for all but the rabbit.

I like 6 shot personally. Rabbits have thin skin and die pretty easy; you could use anything from 4 shot to 7 1/2 shot.

It can be harmful if you bite down real hard on one of the pellets. If you do that, you can break a tooth. Other than that, no, it isn't harmful. It's just like eating birds that have been shot with lead shot. As long as you don't break your tooth, or swallow a piece of shot, you should be ok.

If you only consume rabbits or game shot with lead for 10 years.
There are ill effects of lead of course, but, no study has linked shot with lead poisoning. Birds are mainly effected because they grind it up into fine particles before swallowing.
I would be careful; though. I try to pick out as much lead as I can and clean my game well.
Thanks

There are theoretical problems, but an entire lifetime's worth of pellet-eating is normally such a small amount that it really doesn't matter, except when you bite down on a pellet. Ouch!

I would think it wouuld be hazardous if you ate the lead. If you get the shot out, it should be ok. People have been eating them that way for years!

If you bite into a pellet it will hurt! Otherwise, If you cook it and eat it right away, there should be no problem, If you plan to freeze it for later, make sure to TRY and get all the pellets out. It's pretty rare nowadays to find lead shot, most ammo manufacturers only load with steel shot, due to the problems with weakened eggs caused by lead contamination from non-fatal hits on game birds.
