Charlie Trotters, Frontera Grill, TRU
I had my single best meal ever at TRU. We both got the chef's tasting menu. There were 10 courses but at least 6 or 7 were different for each of us as were the wines that came w/ each course. So since we shared we tasted and drank 16 or 17 different courses.ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!!!

ANOTHER OPINION
Classic Elegance meets fine dining
Tru is TRUly sensational! It is elegant, romantic, charming and modern all at the same time. The atmosphere is simple yet radiates modern chicness in Chicago. Tru is expensive, but the quality of the food is well worth the extra money. The portions are small and served in flights. The sushi comes on a glass bowl with a fish swimming at the bottom. The extra touches shine through at Tru! Tru can be a long dining experience, but when you're paying more money you want to relax and enjoy the entire evening. What a great find!

Chicago is a top notch place to enjoy food for any reason, with world-class chefs and innovative local cuisine variations. Because you need a restaurant in the downtown area with no restrictions as to the cuisine type (french, american, japanese, etc.) I'll give a few examples for variety that you might like. One is Marche at 833 W. Randolph St. which has a fun theatrical decor (and french inspired menu), with international celebrities mingling with the local crowd there all the time. Seeing some celebrity you know and admire might be a nice addition to having a great meal. Nine at 440 W. Randolph St. from star chef Michael Kornick has delighful food and atmosphere. As you're celebrating your birthday with your loyal friends, the name of the restaurant might give your celebration an added touch: the name comes from the age at which the owners of the restaurant first met. Last but not least, Tasting Room at 1415 W. Randolph St., is a wine tasting specialty restaurant, which is a great way to spend a celebratory evening, opening presents and tasting wine. They have more than 100 wines to choose from and the cuisine is American contemporary.

Grande Lux cafe offers a unique dining experiance with a nice atmosphere. It is not a steak house it is owned by the same people as cheese cake factory. It is resonably priced and offers 10 pages of options for everyone. their menu is so extensive that even the pickest person will be pleased and the quality of food is fresh and they serve extremely large portions. I have taken several people from around the world to this restaurant and have yet to be disapointed. They do not take reservations but get there early and the wait is usually no more than 30 minutes as they have two stories of tables. It is well worth the wait. I promise you will not be disapointed!!!

Charlie Trotter is the obvious answer.

TRU being a second.

I've also heard great things about Alinea.

I'm just envious of you Chicago dwellers. I live in a B city and can only dream of having those options available without travel.
