yes. petite diced with the liquid or regular canned whole ones. i cut them up first.don't used stewed. they have other things in them that don't mix with beef/barley. for years i wondered what was missing from my soup. that was it.

It depends on the texture you're going for. All canned tomatoes are going to give you flavor, it just depends if you want chunky tomatoes or just tomato flavor. If you don't like it, you can try a different type of tomato next time. By the way - don't waste your time using fresh tomatoes. Fresh tomatoes are bred for appearance and resistance to bruising, not flavor. Canned tomatoes are picked ripe and immediately processed so that they retain their flavor. Also, you may want to soak your barley before putting it into the soup. It will suck up a lot of the broth otherwise.

Beef Barley Soup Mix
1 pint container
3/4 C medium pearl barley, divided
1/2 C dried lentils
2 tsp. dried parsley flakes
1/4 C dried minced onions
1/4 C instant beef bouillon powder
2 tsp. dried celery flakes
1/2 tsp. dried thyme leaves
2 bay leaves
1/4 tsp. black pepper
1/4 tsp. dried minced garlic
Layer soup kit ingredients in the pint container in order listed, using half of the barley first and then the remaining barley at the top. Close container securely.
Attach cooking instructions:
BEEF BARLEY SOUP
1 jar Beef Barley Soup Mix
2 lb. boneless beef chuck, cut into ½ to 3/4-inch pieces OR 2 lb. lean ground beef
1 T vegetable oil
10 cups water
Heat oil in large Dutch oven over medium heat and brown the meat. Pour off drippings. Add the contents of the soup mix and water to the Dutch oven; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover tightly and simmer for 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 hours or until beef is fork tender. Discard bay leaves.
YIELD: 8 servings.

I personally wouldnt use tomatoes in beef barley soup but it's up to you really.

The recipe I have (for 8 servings) calls for 1 (16 oz.) can tomatoes; cut up.

It's a matter of taste if you use Tomatoes or not, if you're making the soup from scratch then go with the fresh. along with your veggies, if your just throwing stuff in the pot them canned will work

Yes I do and the only difference in these types is the texture. Believe me they all taste pretty much the same. I like using stewed that I chop up a bit in a blender.
