My Britax Companion's base is too long for my Honda Element's seat. I do plan on getting it inspected by a certified seat installer very soon but wanted to see what you guys thought.

Well when it comes to the little ones, nothing is to safe. Go to the locale and ask the firemen Thy do it for free and understand how it should be installed. It is free.
If it was my child ( and I have 2 girls) I wouldent drive with my littleones in a seat properly attached to the car.

As long as at least 80% of the child seat is on the vehicle seat, it should be ok. That can cause issues though with the angle of the infant seat so ask about that when you have it inspected.

Eighty-percent (80%) of the child seat has to be on the vehicle seat. Definitely get it checked by a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician. You may have to change to a different style/brand of seat that "fits" with the vehicle seat in your Honda. Not every car seat will fit properly in every car. Check the website for the National Highway Traffic Safety Adminstration... nhtsa.dot.gov for the section "Ease of Use Ratings" for child safety seats. That may help you find a better- fitting car seat.
