I think it's a great idea. But they would still be "ushers", not "usherettes." Enjoy!

This is untraditional, but not abnormal. Whatever you decide to do for your wedding will be fine as long as you think it through and present it well. Sometimes it helps to offer explanations of a sort in the "program" or wedding bulletin.
I know there was a huge pre-wedding issue with mine over me wanting both my dad and step-dad to walk me down the aisle. One was willing to do it together, one was not. So, I decided to have neither in order not to not have a big blowup.
I decided my fiance would come halfway down the aisle to meet me to symbolize our intentions to meet each other halfway in the spirit of cooperation in our marriage. So I put something about it in the program, so it would not raise any questions. (Then my fiance got all eager and wouldn't wait for the right point in the music and just practically ran all the way to the back of the church and got me before I had even emerged. So, it was ruined, but whatever, the idea was there.)

hey it's your wedding. i don't see a problem with it. i would ask them to wear something that matches the male ushers, not anything that looks like the bridesmaids dress. nothing says a woman can't be an usher and it's an important duty, perhaps even more important than following you down the aisle.

There is nothing wrong with this. I am doing the same they except a little different. My ushers are two of my female cousins, they can wear whatever they want. They are gonna be seating people, handing out booklets and encouraging guests to sign my guest book frame.

i think it is a nice idea as long as they realize that they have to seat people and what being an usher is all about. You may want to consider making them guest book attendants or give them a job at the reception such a gift attendant.

There is nothing wrong with female ushers. But it would look very wierd to have them in bridemaid's dresses.
Perhaps you could avoid the circus look by not including any of the five?

No, just call everyone "attendants" - They can do all the usual ushers duties - greet guests, hand out programs - except still have the guy attendants escort ladies to their seats - especially the older generation of lady guests who are use to that custom.

No, some people usually call the female ushers a hostess. Congratulations

Elope. It's gonna be a circus no matter what you do. Elope and come back all smiles. Host a fantastic party and invite everyone. Nobody will be offended then. They'll be coming by saying, " Great party!"

Have them do readings or hand out programs, or door favors at the reception. Have them serve your wedding cake. Don't have them wear bridesmaid dresses if they are not bridesmaids.
