For the first part of the 20th century, oprhanages were prevalent in the United States and foster care was unheard of. Today, foster care seems to be the norm, but I don't think it is any better than an oprhanage, in fact, I would argue that it is worse. The cases of abuse in a foster family is rising, many foster parents are only in ito for the money and do not really care about the child, and children are often bounced around multiple times from family to family. This is very damaging to a child emotionally. Atlhough orphanages to not offer a mother and father figure, they would have caring adults in their lives. They would also be in a more stable environment, where they could stay for a longer period of time. As long as caring and stable individuals are found to be in charge of the oprhanage, and proper facilities are used, I think it would be a much better situation for oprhaned or homeless children.

Your argument is strong. However you are expecting that the orphanages are run by people who care about the children, and of course they all dont. The same as with foster families, some are certainly in it only for the money, which is really sad.

What should happen is that foster centers should keep close tabs on the foster families, and do extensive interviewing before letting someone become a foster family. This is a very important calling, not just anyone should be allowed to be a foster parent. I dont think that foster care should be done away with, nor do I think that orphanages should be. There are way too many kids out there who need help.

When I first saw your question, I had formulated my answer. However, after reading your argument, I have to say my answer changes quite dramatically.

My mother had a foster home and it was very good for the kids we took in. The children had many positive things to look forward to, but it was hard every time the Social Workers would come in and uproot the child for one lame reason after another.

Orphanages could be a good solution, but I would be concerned that children would not have the interaction as a family member to help them develop into productive members of society. Personally, I feel many of the foster homes should be investigated a WHOLE lot more closely. The streamlining of the process of placing children into foster homes could use a lot of changes to help limit the amount of times a child is bounced around.

Maybe they should produce a whole new way of helping our children. Maybe there is a way to combine the positives of each of the entities to help provide a safer home to children.
Many times they are adding many rules and procedures to how things are run, but rarely are taking away regulations that no longer work. They should start from scratch and fresh!

Foster care is really having a fake mother and father. The children know this, and cannot bond. I think it would be better to have orphanages but we have to be willing to pay the taxes to have excellent staff and keep the place in check for abuse problems. But I think that most children would actually like it better.

i have been in foster care for awhile and it wasn't fun at all, but they still do help us.they have what is called a social worker who comes by every once in awhile to check up on you.if there is serious problems or whatever, you just need to tell the social worker and they can help.the foster care services sets up the appointment like, checkup, dentist, doctor, whatever it is you need.some foster parents probably do this for the money, but how would you know all of them are like that? i have met even some people that not even rich or anything, but just a little bit poor but they even still help kids in need.some even done it for over 10 years.i also think foster care is for kids only who had their parents taken away for a reason.

The foster care system is extremely flawed. I agree that orphanges are much better because the children are in a stable envirnoment rather than being placed in various homes.
