I had a Shell gas card for about 5 years and was never charged an annual fee. Then in June, I received my statement which included a $25 annual fee. The reverse side of the statement had instructions to write a letter if I wanted to close the account and avoid paying the annual fee. I wrote the letter and then received a letter back saying the account was closed as requested. Now they want me to pay them the $25 plus late fees and they reported it on my credit that I have an outstanding balance! I wrote to the disputes department but that didn't help either. I spend way more than the measly $35 they want, and they just lost a loyal customer. Please join me in my boycott until they repair the damage they did to my credit report. Thanks and Happy New Year!

Yeah, I am aware that my boycott will not hurt them that much, and I am aware that their credit division is different (I think it is actually Citibank). I am planning to collect data from my past statement to write a letter to the owner of the Shell station at the end of my street to try to apply "upward pressure." I know it won't be too significant, but it is a matter of principal, not money.

I have called them and they tell me that I used the card (for the annual fee) before it was closed. They are a joke!

I don't blame you for your boycott in any case. However, have you tried getting someone on the phone about it? There is a good chance that if you kept your correspondence, you can not only get the debit reversed and close the account, but Shell will contact your credit bureau to remove the negative mark. I had my bank make a mistake like that and although it took me 40 minutes on the phone, I did get it straightened out completely. When you call, start by "I hope you can help me" rather than what you're really feeling. Good luck!

GOOD LUCK! I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the owners of Shell also own other companies.

Just to be a realist, you will not be able to get a large enough boycott to hurt them.

I am sure you have gotten those emails to the boycott effect, and they don't work either. What it is going to take is a lot of phone time and stress on your part to get what you want.

Sure you can call the better business bureau, but that doesn't do anything for you right now. Ask yourself if it is worth the additional headache, then do accordingly to that answer.

The company you should boycott is not Shell but CitiCorp which extend credit and services your account under the Shell brand.

That's why I dot not apply for ANY type of credit with Citi, they are too unpredictable and very difficult to deal with.

My wife got charged by Capital One for NOT using her card! There was a class-action lawsuit against them, which they lost. Maybe you should consider initiating or joining one against Shell. Good luck.

SHell is the best gas company in the world. Sorry I ONLY by my gas at Shell. They do not operate the credit division themselves, do they? Sorry I will not join you!
