In april this year, i would have completed 4 years as an unmarried partner of a person present and settled here. (me Asian, my partner french, residing in the UK). The letter states that i should be eligible for indefinite leave to remain (permanant residence) in April. However, i have heard that the rules have changed for work permit holders, and that instead of 4, they have to now wait for 5 years before applying for PR. Does this also apply to my category ? i am really confused and cannot understand the website material. Please help ...

If as you say your visa was issued as the fiancee/unmarried partner of a UK resident then you actually only have to be in the UK two years to qualify (see form Set M at the governments website http://www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk/6353/11406/formsetm0606.pdf ). If you came for another reason on your original visa, e.g. student, work then there are other rules.

The form Set M is fairly straight forward and should be no problem to fill out. It must be filed before your visa expires. Best of luck!

I am sorry, but I don't know the answer to this one. I would suggest you go to a Law Centre or Citizen Advice Bureau to check this out. Good Luck!

You can contact either Home office, or Imigration & Natioanality Directorate at www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk . Therefore I 'd like to inform you that when a law changes it applys to ALL, which means also to you. But to be more sure contact them. Good Luck

Contact immigration solicitors and ask them
But do not go on your own in Croydon, I mean without a legal representative
