Coming from a 20 year-old who is addicted to the internet, I'd say it's a problem. When you've got so much to do sitting in front of your computer, what's the point of going outside?

An Addiction is something that you do consistently without self control. When you are speaking of teenagers there could be some kind of parent control in the home also. The teenager only does what they are allowed to do. We as parent buy the computers, buy the games, buy the internet and also leave unnecessary access. Set a time for your child to be online and discuss what they are allowed to do and not to do on the computer. Plan activities with your teenager to subsitute the computer use, he or she may just be using the computer due to lack of anything else to do. Too much of anything is considered an addiction.

I think also that teenagers have too much access to a computer. It's true the Internet is amazing for homework. This is a prime example but there should be a time limit on how long they get to use the computer.
How do we accomplish this without making the parent the bad guy?
Do not have a computer in every bedroom.
One computer per family, not everyone can use the computer at the same time.
Hope I've helped.
Good luck with the assignment.

Some teen internet addiction does occur.

Some people have addictive personalities period.

Teen internet addiction is probably a lot safer than being addicted to alcohol, drugs, gambling, or sex.

So if one has an internet addiction I'd say it's pretty benign compared to the alternatives.

id say internet addiction in front of the tv is not just a problem its the cell phones also that can be a problem parents shouldnt get theier kids the cell phones. but id rather see these teenagers inside the house in front of the computer all day or watching the tv rather than being outside hanging around their freinds getting into trouble.

I have to say that I am glad I don't gave a computer in my house because I know I would be on it ALL the time and avoid the things I should be doing. I like the beginning idea for the internet, to give people information they wouldn't normally have access too but it has gone to far. I get nasty things in my email all the time and I know I didn't sign up for that. I plan to buy a laptop in the near future for my banking but my children will only have restricted access to it for school reasons. Then again thats at MY house. Not at their friends. I believe parents today need to be like our parents(well aleast mine) used to be. I wasn't allowed to hang out with anyone that my parents didn't know. The question before I ever walked out the door from my dad was, who are you hanging out with and who's their mom and dad. I believe parents need to take more responsibilities for their children. These are only MY beliefs.

God Bless

...i would be carefull how you use the term "addiction" here. i don't think it is a fitting word for increasing relationship of person to technology.

i do believe however that it has both healthy and unhealthy realities.

but that would be a revelation inviting more social realizations.

i do know that there are very real dangers for children health which are not much addressed and i do know that there are parents which permit this technology to be as a sitter....and this as i have already spoke....has both positive and negative implications.

but let us not use the term addiction for one can not truly be addicted to communication/socialization/discovery.

these would be human capacities/functions/realities.

be well

It is an addiction, but if you take them off the computer,or just allow them on a few hours a day in safe places on the net, then you can control it.

It's really sad these days it is just as bad as gambling drugs or drinking and very scary for parents ...when you notice your kids never want to even play with their friends anymore because they can't get out from in front of the computer there is a problem, once i noticed this happening to my son i started letting him on for only 30 min a day, unless it's for homework. He was very mad at me in the beginning but now it seems to have worked because now he's not so bad some days he doesn't get on at all,and that's coming from a 12 year old who would have before sat in front of the computer all day long if i let him.
