Minors under the age of 18 are not required to show an ID at all on domestic flights. If he appears to be 18 physically, he may get asked to prove his age by the TSA. a school ID (if it has his age and photo on it), or his birth certificate (original or notarized copy) would be helpful. IS he traveling with you, or alone? How old is he? Call the airline for more advice.

if he is flying as an unacompanied minor, he doesn't need ID, just a birth certificate. they will take yours at the ticket counter and present you with a pass so that you can take him to his terminal. They will also fill out a form for who is going to pick him up at the other end. You must be specific on this information because if you put one person down and someone else shows up........they won't let the child go with him and it becomes a hassle of phone calls. If he is flying with an adult, a birth certificate is all required

I think school I.D.'s are allowed for minors when travelling. I would suggest that you take him to the DMV asap to get a state I.D. They cost about $12 in California and most of the time you get it in the mail within a week or two. A state I.D. is a MUST HAVE for any minor.
