A hospice is a facility where the patients have been diagnosed with a terminal illness and will pass-away within six months. The goal of hospice is to provide a safe, comfortable environment for the patients & to maintain their activities of daily living (bathing/ eating/ elimination /dressing). Typically the patients are on pain medications if they have chronic pain, and many medications which would aid to maintain life (such as blood pressure medications necessary to prevent stroke/MI) are not administered.
The primary purpose of a hospice is to provide death with dignity.

Hospice generally provides comfort measures to patients which primarily includes pain control and management. Most of the patients in hospice are considered to be at the end of life stage like terminally ill patients with cancer.

My mum was in a hospice for six months.
I guess it depends on the hospice, but the one she was in was lovely. You have your own room - you can bring photos in, flowers in etc. There is a nice garden. Doctors on call, as well as alternative therapists coming round - Reiki healers etc.
Everyone is very friendly and there's no need to be frightened of it - generally the patients seem much happier there than in hospital.

I have never been in a hospice but worked as a hospice nurse for over ten years. The role of the hospice nurse is to assist the patient as his body closes down and dies. To help control the pain level so their passing is as painless and peaceful as possible. I also worked and counseled with the family to help them say goodbye and release the patient to die. after death I was there to console the family...often sharing tears with them. I loved this nursing role.
