Depend on what sound you want to hear, the roar of the exhaust to drown out the noises in the motor, or the sound of the siren when the cop pulls you over for non standard exhaust,
but on a serious note , replace your exhaust with a larger bore exhaust and smaller muffler, that will give you a good deep note without attracting too much attention, this can also improve economy and horse power as it lets the engine breath.

I have a 91 wrangler. I put a K&N hi flow on it, and that really opened up the breathing at the front in, and almost sounds like a pontiac when it breathes now. A few months later i cut out all my exhaust and sidepiped it coming out just past the passenger door. You have to be careful on placement though, because when wheelin' and not moving to much, if it's not centered right you will either have a rear tire that is burning up, or a passenger that is getting a headache. It sounded real nice, and since i let it exit on the passenger side, it wasn't super loud for me when the top was off.

with the inline 6 putting dual exhaust isnt that big of a sound difference because the engines made for one outlet not two. but a catback and a header will make your jeep louder. if you really want to and if you can go to a muffler shop and see if theyll put in a single chamber muffler it will be loud but it probably wont sound good. so again the best you can do is a catback exhaust system and a header if you want louder but good sounding exhaust not loud and crappy.

actually you can put a true dual on a I6 quadra tec has a dual header for the Jeep I6. you can do that with flowmaster exhaust but that will be pricey!! Ive done it on a Jeep grand cherokee. sounds Great!!! also you can get an electric cut out. http://www.speedunlimited.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/st_main.html?p_catid=3904 but its for "off road" use only

Cut off the muffler, and it will be louder than ****.

Get some headers and run a pair of straight pipes and it will be so loud it will be stupid.

first take off the mufflers and put some flowmasters or no mufflers at all, then take off the catalytic converters, and finally take out the air silencer on the air intake, at this point your jeep should be pretty loud

Cracked exhaust manifold perhaps. Not an unheard of thing on the Jeep 4.0. The crack opens up once hot, and gets noisy.
