ive known this guy in work for just over 18 months hes pretty shy and i get the impression hes quite awkward round me and theres this tension which i dont know why as its not like i have stalked him. Anyway how can i get anything out of him as he doesnt initate convo with me he does with all the other gals its just me who he finds hard. I cant make him out

Perhaps he doesn't feel very comfortable around you for whatever reason. Could be he fancies you (can sometimes make things awkward), could be that you don't seem as easy going and friendly as the other girls.
Looks like you'll have to do the talking and initiate conversations if you want any chance of getting him 'out of his shell'.

maybe watch him interact with the other people and see what they are doing differently than you...maybe you come off to strong for him as he is shy and all...having someone more domineering is a little scary for shy people...maybe start with something you know that he likes...are you in a higher position in the company and that makes him scared...it could be something totally different...maybe sit down and talk to him and see if something about you bothers him just be honest and tell him you don't want him to feel that way around you...you are a great person and don't want anyone to be afraid of you no matter what...

I've been in his position - as far as I can understand from the picture you've painted here. 'Fear' is the main word that springs to mind, fear of what interests him, fear of being rejected, fear of failure, fear of his own low self esteem.... Fear of you - maybe his goal - and the power that position gives to you.
Want to know him better, then find a bridge for the gap, something that interests him , call it small talk if you like, but something that he knows something about that you can use to approach him ...softly. Use that subject - the bridge - to get him to open up through ....and BUT, best not on any account to behave in a manner which says or intimates that 'you USED anything to get him to open.'
It would smack of trickery and more than likely cause him to withdraw, feeling cheated. Try to allow him to lead the way.
With that said, please, only do any of this if you are interested in him as a person.

Just be patient with him because im a shy man and every new girlfriend i get see me as a shy person but after a while i start to come out my shell because im starting to get comfortable around this person. I guess what im trying to say is just wait until he feel comfortable around u.

Sounds to me like he fancies you and doesn't want to get into the 'just friends' situation. It'll be easy enough to get something out of him - ask him out for a drink after work. If he says yes, you'll get to know him at least a little better. If he says no, then he has a problem with you... You'd have to ask him what I guess!

He might have a crush on you and just be very shy. You could just ask him if you make him uneasy. Id just give him some time and just show him that you are nice and that you are not going to be mean to him.

Just small talk as much as you can. I was shy and it's what helped me to be less frightened of people.
