Depending on where the airline bought the fuel, it would either cost $65,455.00 or $64,343.50 for the flight from LAX to JFK.

Here's how I arrived at the answer.

Jet A fuel at LAX costs $5.30 from Chevron and $5.21 from Landmark Aviation.

LAX-JFK is 2,470 miles (one way). The 747 would burn 5 gallons per mile, so it would consume 12, 350 gallons of fuel on the trip.

So depending on where the airline purchased gas from, it would either cost $65,455.00 or $64,343.50 for the trip.

Early 747-100 could hold approx. 47210 gals of Jet A. Other models much more, What the airlines pay for fuel depends on what they negotiated with their suppliers. Currently one airline I know is paying about $1.63 a gal. Contract fuel is very different from spot fuel purchases at an FBO. How much fuel a 747 burns on a transcontinental flight will vary a lot. Winds, weight at departure, which model the airline is operating all will affect it. There is no one answer that will work. A rough ball park figure might be in the nature of 3800-4200 gals an hour at an optimum altitude, but that's going to vary a lot too. Fuel burn will be higher in the beginning of the flight and as the aircraft gets lighter and can climb, the hourly fuel burn will decrease.

a 747-8 holds 64,225 gals of fuel with a range of 8,000-nmi and AVgas at approx $5.50 per gallon would make a 8000 nautical mile trip cost $353,237.50

New York to L.A. airline milage is 1923 nmi so a one-way trip would cost about $85,000

If you can afford a 747 jet, I can't imagine that you would actual be worrying about the cost of the fuel???

A standard Boeing 737 holds 6,707 gallons of fuel at full capacity. How much jet fuel a plane burns depends greatly on how it is flown, but a coast-to-coast flight would typically use more than 3,000 gallons.

I pulled my 747 into the local Exxon yesterday and gas cost me $2.25/gallon. Bummer, huh?

If you have to ask...then you can't afford it. Trade it in for something smaller.
