Hi, I need suggestions. My guy friend has a new house and I have no clue what the decor is. I don't know him very well, but he's really nice and I'm happy to attend his party. So, what is a good, neutral, guy friendly thing? besides beer... Thanks!

thanks everyone! :) the plant is great, but I forgot to add that the gift has to clear international customs. I won't have to buy something when I arrive.

I would go to the Duty Free shop and purchase a good wine. Or a lot of different countries have little ward off evil spirits home goodies (good luck home charms) native to that country does that make sense? One of the better housewarming gifts I've seen was the prayer for a safe and peaceful home in hebrew. It was beautifully decorated and very thoughtful.

Get him a house cleaning kit. most guys i know grew up with their mother cleaning up after them. Many dont even know that their toilet DOES get dirty and become unclean. If they dont clean up after themselves THINGs grow and live. Skabies Lice, etc.
but that should be ONLY one of two gifts. Another gift could be a popular CD collection, or a new phone that has all the features. If your budget is a little unlimited get him a Game station depending on how old he is. Xbox 360 and PS3 will keep him home on the weekends. LOL, so you know he is not cheating.
Tradition says to get him a bottle of wine or fix him some dinner, even a cake, but if he is legal, a half rack of good beer is good.
Some pratical gifts can be given as well, like Underwear and socks. I almost guarantee it that in 20 years he might still own the same underwear. unless he has a waist size that Puffs up beyond his original measurement.

Housewarming gifts should be for "the house." Special gifts should be selected with some thought in mind. The Dollar Store is appropriate. A toaster, iron, glasses, maybe even a fake plant. If you want to go one step further bake a special gift, cookies, brownies some type of finger food.

okay, your best bet is to pick up the gift once you have landed.Do you plan on laying over at your friends until you fly out? will you be is house guest after the house warming? if that is the case, then you should not have a problem getting his gift. once you arrive, settle in, use his vehicle to pick up his gift before the party. there isnt a perfect one size fits all house warming party gift for a guy. but if you pick up pint glasses for beer, then it will be cool, and memorable. remember that a couple ofpint glasses should be kept in the refrigerator at all times, but this is the coolest gift for a guy.

If you have to go thru customs then you are coming from afar. That would be the gift to him.If you must get him something, take a nice bottle of wine to the house warming.Or try to find out the decor and send a bouquet of fresh flowers for the party.Remember yellow and white flowers are always a great bouquet........CHEERY.

My future son-in-law just bought a house & we got him this really cool lamp. It's a fountain that is shaped like a bunch of leaves and it lights up. It's very masculine and goes with any decor. It cost me $30 at Walmart and they had several differ kinds / shapes of these types of lamps.
They are boxed up pretty good so you should be able to take it on a plane without any problems.

The best thing to give would be a gift card to Bed, Bath and Beyond, Home Depot, Sears, or any store where he could buy stuff he is interested in. A gift card relieves a lot of stress in buying a gift. So don't sweat this just give your friend a gift card. I wish you well.

I think a cookbook that includes recipes that he would enjoy along with a few gadgets for the kitchen might be a nice little gift. I got my brother a cookbook called "Cooking for Dummies". He really liked it, because it had different tips for a beginning cook, and some pretty good recipes.

Something he'll appreciate a LOT will be a welcome mat or any type of mat for the front door. It'll save a lot of work for him (sweeping or vacuuming), will look nice and probably be something he doesn't think about. It's also something that will be easy to transport rolled up or flat in a large suitcase but won't be heavy or take up a lot of room.

Stay with a simple design, though...like the wrought iron scroll-type designs. You want it to be manly enough for him to display year-round and not cutesy so he hides it or gets rid of it the moment you leave!
