I'm 22 years old and I've been experiencing leg cramps pretty often this past few months. It's only happened while I'm sleeping, when I stretch my legs. Sometimes I can actually feel it coming. I was wondering if anyone might know the cause of it. I drink at least 3beer 5x a wk, can that be the problem?

I think your main problem is probably not enough water. You should be drinking at least 8-10 8 oz. glasses per day. And maybe more because you drink so much beer.

But your body may be lacking in something also. Perhaps potassium, eat some bananas! Or iron. When I was pregnant I got INCREDIBLY terrible leg cramps, only at night also. I know what you're going through. When you feel one coming, try to grab the toe area and pull your foot upwards towards your leg. Someone told me to do this, and it would stretch the muscle and make the cramp instantly go away!

Ouch! This happened to me when I was younger and playing sports all the time. Two things helped. Sometimes if your shoes don't support you properly, your shins/legs will suffer. Try getting insoles that better support your foot. Also, you may not be getting enough potassium. Try either eating a banana a day (which will get old real quick) or taking a dietary supplement with potassium in it. A once daily vitamin should have enough in it to help.

Nighttime leg cramps are usually a symptom of calcium deficiency. Drink calcium fortified orange juice and eat leafy green vegetables. U can also supplement w/ a good coral calcium or oyster shell calcium as long as it also includes magnesium. Vitamin D is also needed to utilize the calcium.

the biggest thing is stretching the muscle that's cramping. and yes, beer is a diuretic, and muscle cramps are associated with dehydration. if you also have frequent headaches that's what's causing it. so try to decrease the beer or drink twice as much water as you do beer, and it should improve. also, try eating a banana before you go to bed. potassium is the chemical needed for the muscle to stop contracting.

My Father's doctor told him it was caused by caffeinee. He quit the caffein and the cramping stopped. Occasionally I would see him doing the midnight cramp dance and I would just say, "Ah-ha!" , and he would say, "I know, I know, but it was just a little." Drinking water helps many problems also. Hope this helps you. Mmm

try putting a bar of soap - brand doesn't matter, under your sheets. I don't know how or why but it worked wonders for me.
Also increase water intake and add potastium to your diet (bannans, potatoes etc...)
