My co-worker is a great person, and is soo nice with me. He's father passed over the weekend. And I don't have money to give in the collection plate. The money that I do have is for my past due bills. What should I do? I don't want to seem rude. Plus my boss was the one that had the idea if the collection plate.

You need to pay your bills first. If anyone says anything to you (which would be rude) just explain that you just do not have any extra money right now. The collection plate should not be public anyway.

If you do not have the money, then you can't give. Send him a nice Sympathy card and that will be that.Or if you can,go to his Families house and take a little food----cake,cookies,can of coffee,box of tea,or any kind of sweets.That is a good way to show your feelings are sincere.Why wouldn't your boss just make everyone aware of the hardship and leave a basket in the break room for them to donate?You do what you can, even if it's giving your condolences in person to him.

My mom passed away two years ago. I still have the wonderful cards sent to me and my family. Do not worry about being short on money. Believe me, most of us on this message board are in the same shape or were at one time. A card wil convey that you are thinking of your coworker, and it's the thought that counts.

Its the thought that counts. GO to the dollar store get a nice card. Show up to the viewing or funeral. Thats worth more then any money you could give.

just send the family a condolence card, attend the funeral/burial, if you can't attend then go to the funeral home and see the body. there's more you can do to show your condolences besides giving a monetary donation.

Well if you don't have the money, well its not rude. You could see if someone would spot you some money and then give it back to them on payday.
