I'd say they were different.
I've known a few people in my time who have acted loud in order to hide their shyness and a person who is quiet can be very confident.
Not everyone wants to be the centre of attention, but sometimes those that do are insecure in themselves and need constant validation or approval from others around them.

I don't think that shy and quiet is the same thing. However, usually people that are shy are quiet. You could be quiet and not shy. I sometimes am very quiet but i am far from shy. When i am quiet it is usually because i have nothing to say or that i just don't feel like talking.

A person could be both, but they don't have to be both. I used to be shy and quiet. Now I'm not shy anymore, but I'm still quiet. Being shy is sort of like having a fear of other people, so you don't say or do much in fear of embarrassment. Being quiet means you just don't have much to say at a certain point in time but it's not out of fear.

It depends. I am quiet, but not shy. I speak only when my view points are most necessary. Shy is withdrawn from social situations. But there are also those who are quiet and shy. Hope you find what you're looking for.

shy and quiet go together hand in hand... a shy person is generally a quiet person because they dont have the confidence to talk to people they dont know

It is in the body language....some people are "shy" and will avert there eyes, or their body language will let you know they are uncomfortable talking with people.
Other people are quiet...their body language will let you know they aren't afraid of you, however, they just don't talk much.

being shy means your not very confident around people you may not know but then you could be loud when you know them. if your quiet by nature, you will never be loud or boisterous around people but you will stil be confident around them
