OK , look dogs (and cats for that matter) urinate on things as if to say "that is mine" its natural , if he does this in the house you must show him that " every thing in this house it mine , every thing outside is yours" this i hard with puppys but its possible.oh and note that marking territory IS different from going to the bathroom. that leads to the topic of house-traing your pup,now be gentle but assertive , and VERY patient . the way i house-train my pups is watch them at ALL times when they are in the house other wise put him in the cage. then when he is out if he looks like he is " about to GO" quickly scoop him up and put him out. this work very well but will take time as any tactic would . but as far as marking goes you dont have to worry about it much since most people ( unless you are me) you probably wont have to worry about it , but if you are planning on letting him sleep\visit inside as long as you are the dominant one you have no need to worry.

"A dog's sniffer is an incredibly fine-tuned, delicate instrument compared to our own sniffer. It makes sense, then, that scent-marking -- spraying urine on places and objects to mark territory and claim ownership -- is an important part of canine communication. The chemical scent-messages in a dog's urine tell other dogs just about everything they need to know: where the marking dog hangs out, how long it's been since he's been around, and (in the case of a female) sexual receptivity. A dog who's nervous because he's home alone may mark furniture or walls to reassure himself that everything is all right. Scent-marking can also be a way of asserting dominance, which is why some dogs will lift their legs on other dogs or even people."

Dogs mark thier territory as a sign to other dogs (and other animals) that they live here and to keep out. Male dogs do this all the time unless they are neutered. Most of the time, males mark territory by urinating on the spot they wish to mark. This urine often has a strong odor and can be offensive if done in your home.
We had an un-neutered male rottwieler, who would scent mark everything, but he was neutered and his scent marking slowed down. If you get your puppy neutered early, he probably won't scent mark at all.

I have seen my female dogs mark territory, my two usually squat rather than lift a leg, but they are still marking. I will tell you an interesting tidbit: If a male dog marks an object such as a telephone pole or a hydrant it's goal is to lift it's leg higher than the strongest scent on the pole to cover up the last dogs scent.

Think of it like gang members spraying grafitti to tell others that they "own" a certain "turf". Just like gangs, dogs may defend their "turf" if others try to claim it by spraying a little of their own grafitti in the same area.
Also be aware and mindful of where you allow your dog to mark. You do not want your dog to be spraying "gang symbols" outside of his own back yard, if you know what I mean. What happens when an outsider comes into someone elses hood and marks territory? Have you ever heard of "turf wars"? Well, dogs do this as well. If they ever meet, chances are the 2 dogs will need to attempt to see who is the badder #$% and is king of the turf - many times aggressively.
Good luck.

Dogs mark territory to say....."I live here" "Don't mess with me" "Don't mess with my family or else I'll kill you." They do it because they think their boss and they wanna tell everybody else that. My history teacher once told us a story of where his dog would go to every post in the fence every morning to pee on it.

And a good way to prevent this from happening with your male puppy is to get him fixed at 6 months.

Dogs mark their terrotory by urinating on its boundaries. They mark their territiry to alert other dogs that it is theirs.

a male dog will " pee " on stuff...trees, hydrants, the fence.....car tires.....your couch....etc...etc.... to let other dogs know...
" hey, I live here, and this is my stuff "
or
" I don't care if you live here, I'm bigger than you "
etc...etc.....
get your dog neutered if you don't plan on breeding him, it will cut down on marking problems coinsiderably
