I am 35 and a SAHM. I'm petite with short legs but am carrying a little weight right now. I want to train myself to run. I have a 1/3 mile track nearby. Today, I went out and did six laps around it. I TRIED to jog the length of the track a few times while walking around the curves to catch my breathe. It was tough

Does anyone have some tips?

Okay, I'm way sore from my little run this afternoon. Besides amounting to me being out of shape, is that a good thing to be sore already?

It's actually not hard to build up your stamina and endurance at all! This is a good start-up program for runners: Don't rely so much on laps as on time, if you're wanting to get fit enough to run longer distances. First, warm up with a brisk walk for 3-5 minutes. Then jog at a comfortable pace for 5 minutes (or 3 if that's easier) Walk for 5. Alternate 5 minute walks/jogs for 30-35 minutes. Do this 3-5 times a week for a week.

The week after that, increase your jogging times by a minute or two, or whatever you feel you can handle. Or, decrease your walking time.

If you want, you can substitute laps for time: say, walk two laps, then jog one; then next week, walk one, jog one, then the week after that, walk one, jog two.

The most important thing to remember is start slow, or you'll burn yourself out and grow to hate running, which would be a real shame!! But this is a good program. good luck!

Also if you're into song take a look at jogging with an iPod. The great tip I can supply you is advantage. I was once terrible getting two miles in 17 mins! By the top of the season I had occasions in thirteen mins and I felt robust. And eventually regularly appear ahead to matters like power bars, Gatorade, and the ones remarkable one hundred$+ sneakers ?

OMG you sound like me :) before I started running. I started exactly as follows, since I never ran for health before. Walk 5 min, run for 5, walk for 5 etc. and so forth. Build up week by week at a comfortable pace until you are running and not walking at all. Also if you can, invest in a heart rate monitor so that you can keep your heart rate down and run longer. THIS WORKS, TRUST ME!
