If you're planning to have sexual relations with a person, it's mandatory to discuss your previous sex lives to minimize the risk of spreading STDs. If you're not close to having sex with him, it's none of your business. If you are considering sex, and aren't able to discuss this, you're nowhere near mature enough to have sex.

I would just ask him - straight up. Anyone that's dated has asked the question and has been asked it. It's no big deal. Just be prepared to not like his answer.

Ask about his previous girlfriends....you will find a way to ask if he was intimate with them. You can couch it in terms of asking about his sexual partners from an STD point of view.
