Glad you ask! Yes it can be food related. Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. Your dog may very well have allergies. In dogs, the first sign of allergies is scratching and itching of the feet and legs. In addition to this, they can also develop ear infections. The cause of the allergies can be very diverse, from food allergy to environmental (yes, dogs can be allergic to pollens etc). Dogs do not develop allergies until 1-2 years of age (generally closer to 2).
Make an appointment with your vet to discuss everything and get him checked out. There are a variety of paths to choose, but he needs medical attention. While it could be a food allergy, DO NOT change food yet; you need to put together a logical, step-by-step plan to determine and control his allergies.
In case it is an environmental allergy, whenever he comes inside, take a damp cloth and wipe down his entire body, face, legs, and feet (including bottoms)

my dog licked her paws all the time and i found out that she has allergies. i took her to the vet and the gave me some spray and pills. the pills are just like the people ones you can find in the store. i get the off brand the are pink red and white. they help her a lot. of course i would take him to the vet before giveing him any pills. my cousin as a dog with allergies also and she told me to feed my dog anything that has lamb in it. i have been feeding her lamb for about a month and i can see where it is helping her also. i hope this helped.

Isn't it frustrating trying to figure out what is wrong with a pet? Like babies, they can't tell us where it hurts.
It very well could be allergies, anything from food to the type of carpet freshener you use, or the dog shampoo he gets washed with. You should take him in to your vet, and have him checked out. In the long run, it's easier than playing the guessing game.
My childhood dog was allergic to grass, and had to get shots, just so he could run and play outside, like a normal dog! How weird is that?!

Take him to the vet and they will be able to tell if it is allergies or something under his skin. My dog has allergies for everything so we have him on an all natural food. He gets no table scrapes and no dog treats. If his stomach gets upset, he is allowed chicken and rice. But the vet can tell best.

talk to your vet...food allergies are VERY common and the paws really are a symptom of that. He willprescribe the best food for your pup. There are a lot of good foods on the market that I notice that people have suggested in their responses, however, it can be 100 chicken, but what if your pup is allergic to chicken!! Don;t just switch foods, you need to talk to a vet :)

What are you feeding your dog? Best bet is to stay away from anything with corn, soy or wheat in it if you suspect food allergies. I would try something with a single source protein that the dog hasn't had before like fish. Make sure the carb is something non-grain, like potato and see how he does then...
If that's it, you'll have to watch all treats as well.

My dog has awful allergies. If it's that bad, it's probably airborne. My dog is not only allergic to Beef, wheat, yeast, oats, and barley, he is off the charts allergic to Mould, mildew, grass, dust, and several varieties of trees. It's very expensive to have the dog allergy tested and the shots after, but they are worth every penny. Try to give the dog benedryl and see if that helps. Call you vet to get the correct dosage for your size dog.
