Just like the Louisiana Purchase, why can't the US buy an island, like one of the Azores or an island off of Saudi Arabia or India to use as a military base.It would be a lot closer to the middle east than Diego Garcia and we wouldn't have to beg countries to let us use their land.If the price was right,it would be worth it.

The U.S. "owns" plenty of islands already designed for exactly that purpose.

First off - why do you think Hawaii is even a state? Think about it - Hawaii is a group of islands in the North Pacific Ocean which is 2300 miles away from the mainland. Why? It's a strategic location.

Palmyra Atoll, Baker Island, Howland Island, Jarvis Island, Johnston Atoll, Kingman Reef, Midway Islands, Navassa Island, Wake Island....all uninhabitated possessions of the U.S.

All possessions for military strategic reasons.

You have to be able to project power very quickly, so building a base on an island would 1) limit the scope of operations from that area; 2) be a potentially cost prohibitive undertaking given the geographic limitations; 3) take too long to construct. The current best alternative is a combination of carrier battle groups and cooperative agreements with "friendly" governments.

Because we would need to buy a bunch of them to cover the areas we need to......one island would not do it...Not feasible.....but a good question
