Take both critters to the vet- he'll confirm the mites and (if he's like my vet) will give you a sulfer-based mite wash. You'll have to dillute it in water, he'll tell you how, then bath the critters in it every day for probably a week or so. Warning- it stinks something awful, but it does the job!

I think Frontline is supposed to kill mites...otherwise there are sprays that you can get at any pet store (Adams makes a good one) that can be used for your CAT, not the rat. Theere are a lot of bird mite sprays that are also safe for small animals too that can be purchased at any mpet store. You need to clean the cage that the rat is in with a mild bleach solution and throw out all the bedding and any that you have not used too. Usually that is where the animal gets the mites from, and buy new. Also treat the surrounding area and your carpet, espcially with the cat having them now, and check yourself too. They are very contagious.

It could be fleas, mites, an ear infection or allergies, in that order of likelihood. They can all by caught from other animals, or from the environment, even if she is an indoor-only cat. Take the cat to the vet to find out what the cause of her itchy ear is, then the vet can tell you what treatment to use. Revolution spot-on treats fleas, tapeworms and ear mites - but find out from the vet if it is one of these first! Chalice

You need to get a proper diagnosis from your vet. If it is ear mites he will give you the appropriate medication to clear it up...it may not be mites it could be an ear infection or other issues.
Do NOT use OTC products or self medicate..it can make a problem worse, cause serious damage to teh ears including deafness..also some products can actually be toxic to your pets.

They do make powders and sprays for cats with fur mites, similar to flea powder. You can buy it at most stores that have a pet department. My rabbit recently had fur mites and I treated her with mite powder for cats.

Gross, take them bnoth to the vet ASAP. I ended up getting mites from someone elses cat myself. It was horrible and it took awhile for them to clear up, I still have a few scars on my hands from them.
