A friend of mine had a girlfriend that was verbally and physically abusive to him, but since being involved with someone else, he doesn't tolerate any of that with his current girl; but here's the kicker, he always goes to the ex when he and his girl fall out. Wouldn't that just start the abuse all over again with the ex since she now knows he's with someone else. What's going on with my friend?

verbal or physical abuse from anyone is not tolerated by anyone, why does he go back to this particular girl. Is it a sex thing or what?

It's a comfort thing. Your friend is going back to something they are familiar with and have a history with a person. Those can be powerful attractors even when you know a person is not good for you. Hopefully in time this friend will realize they keep recycling the same old bad stuff with the wrong person.
