Is it because they are so afraid of death and nothingness, that they grasp at straws?

I am not religious and I believe in an afterlife. In fact, I believe that our souls live many lives. To me nothingness is not even a possibility. An afterlife would not necessarily require a god, in my opinion.

No,
I believed in what I read in the bible. and other books of scripture. I dont necessarily believe every word but i do believe.
As for the book , God Part of the brain, by mathew alpert, I think he has a definite Fact that must be looked into but I also believe his conclusions are faulty and based upon a bias of hatred for some evil things done to him in the name of religion.
God has given each person a gift of the spirit.
I have Seen an Angel Appear in my room, whether it was Satan himself or the holy ghost in person, or whether it was an answer to a prayer to be baptized in the holy spirit, nevertheless I saw this vision and the entire room was completely white and the entire insides of my mind. He leaned over and touched me.

This was completely a spiritual experience with power, but it is also very much like a matrix simulation where in the movie it is called a "construct", the white room where things can be added.
I prefer to believe this was not a construct, because of the all engulfing Peace of mind that came with it.
however ihave had the SUN rise in my heart, while in the middle of the night and with the windows covered up and sleeping under my covers. and many many times. The mind alone can be a RECIEVER but the spirit can get up and walk into the NEXT room and see other things.
Many people believe in an afterlife and THEY are NOT all christian. because so many people have witnessed things that are described after they DIE and Do return to breathe and testify to what they SEE.

I am a Catholic as well as a religion minor and trust me Christians are not afraid of death. Rather, they believe that there is something better to live for after we die. In fact almost every religion believes in a better something after they die. Buddhists believe in Nirvana which is the complete escape from the cycle of reincarnation. Christians actually look forward to death. Christians are taught that when we die it was God telling us that it was our time and the soul will be going to a better place. Christians have no idea what that better place is, they just know that the turmoils faced during life on earth are not present. I hope this helps you and understand that not all religious beliefs are crazy.

Because there is no harm in it.

Even Einstein said it is smarter to believe in the afterlife.

If Christians are right they go on to the afterlife. If they are wrong they go on to nothingness.

If Atheist are right they go on to nothing. If they are wrong they go on to nothing (or Hell I suppose).

No matter how you add it up, by believing in something you at least have a chance at going someplace nice when you die, if your wrong it won't matter because you will go on to nothingness either way.

because of Milton, paradise lost, and Dante's Inferno. the bible states that after death people rest, waiting for Jesus to return and judge them, THEN sending them to eternal life or eternal damnation. However, most Christians believe in heaven because they haven't read their own book, and are afraid to think of nothingness.

i'm a Chatholic Christian. We have faith in an afterlife. this is Heaven and Hell. Hell is a place for the devil and all the undesirable souls. Heaven is a paradise with God and all the individuals who've asked for forgiveness for their sins. Pergatory is almost a purification chamber for all the individuals who have been baptised yet want some cleansing formerly they enter heaven.

I would much preffer nothingness than living with the knowledge that I might spend eternity in torment. How can nothingness be scary at all?

why dont you believe?

are you someone special ?

i am no better than you, but i believe that you are the one that is afraid of death, and you fear so much that you have no other way to help yourself find a path down your lost life and soul but to try to put you fears on others, hoping that you find a way to resolve your issues

one verse is all you need to know to start

No, I think its because this world is okay and all...but its only our TEMPOARY residency. There is so much murder, hate, hardships and problems in the world, it makes one think...there has got to be more than this!

Imagen youself in a pure state of happiness, maybe having a child, getting married ect... Heaven feels like that but 500 times better!!
