The tin cans are ribbed to add strenght to the can to the sides of the cylinder. It keeps them from crushing so easily on the sides. The same thing is done with 55 gallon steel drums.
To test this, take two pieces of paper. Don't fold the one. Then take the other and fold it in half. Then fold the egdes back to the middle fold so that the paper is folded into fourths. When you open the paper it should look like an upside down V or like this: -^-
The upside down V acts like the rib. Try bending the flat unfolded sheet into a circle then try bending the folded/ribbed piece of paper and notice how much more strength the ribbed piece has by resisting to bend.

This concept is also very bold in a round tree. Once you cut rectangular shaped boards out of a tree. The boards can provide more strength than the round log.
