"I am doing a school project and I need to know the minimum wages for the years of: 1939, 1945, 1950, 1956, 1963, 1967, 1968, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1990, 1991, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2006."

In 1939 it was $0.25/hour -- if you count for inflation, that's the same as about $3.22 today.

Note that between 1961 and 1978 there were as many as 4 different minimum wages for different types of workers.

The minimum wage has remained unchanged since September 1997, over 10 years, the longest this has ever happened.

The federal minimum wage was established in 1938 and was set at 25¢ an hour. It does not increase automatically, but requires an act of congress to change it. In 1939 it was still (probably) 25¢ an hour. Most economists think it's counterproductive.
