How much do you think I should anticipate spending if my reception venue allows me to purchase my own alcohol for my reception. We are having 4.5 hour open bar for 125 people with beers (heineken & yuengling lager), wine (woodbridge), liquor (absolut, jack daniels, crown royal, johnny walker red, tangueray gin)?

You should ask the venue for suggestions because they will know what is normally used up during that time for that many people. Also consider contacting a liquor store in advance. Many times you can get discounts if you agree to purchase full cases of certain liquors and wines.

You know your guests, plus each venue charges different prices. Check with the venue to see what the total charge will be, some places charge as much as $22 per drink!! Also know your guests, how many are light drinkers where you can count on them having maybe one or two, how many don't drink, and how many are heavy drinkers? For the heavy drinkers count on 5 drinks. Do your math accordingly. It may wind up costing more. So if you are truley worried about this expense getting way out of hand, you can handle in different ways.

One way is to have a cash bar, where your guests pay for their alcohol themselves, or you can pay for your guests champagne; but the guests pay for there own liquor aside from that.

You could also set-up a limit that you are willing to cover. Such as you are willing to do a host-bar (you pick up the tab) Up to X amount of dollars, after it is reached the bar becomes a cash bar.

If you can supply your own alcohol, this may even save you some money and allow you to pay for all the alcohol; but check with the venue to see if they allow that and if they will have a charge per drink to make/ pour it.

I would think that would run a nice penny. At my wedding we are having an open bar during the cocktail hour (125 people), and it will be a cash bar until we reopen it up later in the evening when the people who are truly there to enjoy the day with us versus drink on our dime (yes there are people who only go to weddings to drink and eat). I estimate about 1000 for ours, but the drinks are only $2 a piece. Think of it like this:

125 people- maybe 70- will drink alcohol (or more)- $3.75-$4.50 per drink- 3 drinks an hour. That is roughly $1300 give or take.

Hi well i have 120 guests coming to my reception for 4.5 hrs, im not too sure about my drinks prices, but i am putting £1000 behind the bar, but i also have drinks at my actaul wedding venue so, once the moneys go, its gone! if they know if they get through thier drink too fast they might have to pay, they should keep it going slow, making the money last longer - I HOPE!
GL(BTW- i think buying your own drink would work out cheaper, but you will prob be charged a corkage fee, their way of making money from you, so in the long run, might be better if you just put a certain amount behind bar)

Depending on the make-up of the crowd (you should have an idea if they are drinkers or not), it should be around $800 to $1,000. If you need to, you can control the cost somewhat by only have one specific thing available during part of that 4.5 hr. time period. For instance, you could just have only beer for the first couple hours -- or have wine on the tables and not have the bar open yet -- and then you could make an announcement at a certain point (usually after the meal is served and consumed) that the full bar is open. I have seen this done before.

Even though your venue allows you to purchase your own liquor, you are usually still charged for their storing, refrigeration & serving. You might think you're saving money but in the long-run are only saving pennies. Better check first.

Probably about $6-8 per person so about $750-$1000 make sure you count each person not everyone will drink but you don't want to run out.

I did that i my wedding. Do yourself a favor, make a list of your closest 25-50 guests. Then make a list of all the liquer, juice, soda, beer, ect... that you'll need. Take that list to them and ask them if they wouldn't mind bringing something. Im telling ya, everyone will be more then willing to help, and you will save BIG bucks!!!
