The "Big Apple" is a nickname for New York City never used by New Yorkers. Its popularity is due to a promotional campaign by the New York Convention and Visitor's Bureau in 1971, although there are earlier records of people calling it that before then.

It's a old code word from the days of slavery, same as georgia peach. Thats what i was told on the Circle line which is a boat tour that circles NYC.

because its one of the biggest cities in the US, its home of what was the world trade center, now freedom tower, and it has the world Financial center, many large banks and headquarters for many of the big industries of the US.
