(Muslims only please) I think I have clinical depression and want to try to take an anti depression medication. My husband said, " If you think a pill help at all, then you are basically saying Allah is not sufficient." What do you think?

Im sorry but i do not agree with your husband. by taking the pills, you are merely using what Allah (swt) has given for you in this life to your best advantage. Allah is entirely sufficient and by takng pills you are not saying that He is not. Allah has ability to do all things. He has provided you with food and water but by thinking the way that your husband is (no offence btw), you might as well say that Allah is omnipotent, He can quench my thirst and satisfy my hunger, i will not eat. Indeed, Allah has this power to do this but use what you have. The medicine in itself will not cure you, by Allah's will, it will work. It is He* who decides whther it shall make you better or not. Pray as well but i recommend the medication as well if it is really necessary. I hope i have answered your question sister. peace be upon you. i hope you get better soon.

My husband is Muslim and I am American and I have had clinical depression for many years. This is an area we tend to not agree on. He feels that reading the Qur'an with an open heart will help you very much. I agree to a certain extent, but I think that medication will certainly help you if your doctor thinks you need it. My husband does agree that you may need medication to put you back in a place where your faith can keep you strong. I hate the guilt trip of telling you that you are saying Allah is not enough. Clinical depressin is often a chemical inbalance in the brain, not just a feeling of blah. I love and respect Allah but the abuse I sustained as a child caused me serious emotional damage that has only been helped with medication.

Please do not listen to those that say medication does not work or will harm you. Everyone is different and will react differently. I took Prozac for many years and am now on Celexa and I have no lasting side effects. Do what you think is right for you, please. Depression, if untreated, can be very dangerous.

Email me if you want to talk more.

I'm sorry I am not a Muslim, so you may disregard my answer if you want to. I pray and reverence the one God that created the universe and all within, just as you do...though I hold no religious affiliation.

I think your husband has a point. God (Allah) is always sufficient. I was very depressed and anxious, and my husband urged me to go see a psychiatrist. I did go, and I was prescribed an anti anxiety medication, valium. God inclined my heart that this medicine was not for me. I took a few pills and it made my heart act really funny, beating strange. I threw the pills in the toilet and flushed them away. I prayed all day to God and just like that, I was delivered of my suffering and given peace.

I think anti-depressant medicines are good sometimes and people do need them in some cases, but if you have faith that God can change your life, act on that faith and trust only God. I do not believe the medicine is true help. It is altering the chemicals in your mind to make you feel a certain "normal" way, and like me, you may have side effects. True change starts with us, and all we have to do (who believe) is pray to God for our help.

Good luck.

umm most likely not ..
because depression is a condition that you have no control over, therefore why would Allah (swt) punish you for something that which you have no control over?

However you should pray for Him to heal you as soon as possible, because that is in your best interest =]

and ofcourse you can use pills. Allah (swt) has given us knowledge to create these pills, they are there for our benefit and so we are allowed to use them. HOWEVER if we see the pills as a replacement of our faith, and no longer believe in Allah (swt) because we think that the pill is curing us, and Allah(swt) has no partake in the healing what so ever, then you are sinning. It is blasphemy.

And Allah (Swt) Knows Best

p.s. if you would further like information for a near debate with your husband on this topic, I will gladly give it to you =)

Taking the pills is not haram because you're not losing faith although I won't recommend pills for your depression, they never helped.
Try to figure out the reasons of your depression and eliminate them is a better choice.

Your husband is right, pray to Allah to clear your mind, and calm your soul,Islam also is not against science,I think If you feel you need to visit a psychologist you should do this, but he is just a reason to make you feel better.
Prophet Muhammad, told us when we feel depressed or annoyed,we should read surrat(Yusuf).I was very depressed three months ago,I read surrat(Yusuf),I prayed, then I slept,I swear that the next morning came and I found myself much better,I could laugh after it was hard for several days.....
May Allah bless you,and make recover soon...
Peace be with you...

I don't think thats true.

while you should and you must ask Allah to make you better because you will only get better if he wills it.

Reading the noble quran and praying can also get you out of depresion.

however i don't think that taking medicine is haram.
