I just read in the magazine that girls 8-25+ are taking virginity pledges at special balls with their dad. Do you feel this is right or wrong?

My personal thought is if a girl wants to remain a virgin, she can just declare it to herself without telling the world about it.

To me this is creepy. I'd have a talk, but a ball and a ring? This is like a childhood fantasy of marrying your dad. Talking is fine.

Like yourself I do not believe that girls need to do these pledges with their fathers. Especially girls as young as 8 years old as they are probably not even aware of what virginity is. Once a young girl does know what she is pledging she must also be aware of the temptations that will happen and I would question how many are capable of keeping this pledge.

I think this is a great idea. It is also good for the parent to buy a very special ring and the girl wears it on her soon to be wedding finger. This helps reminds the young girl of the pledge that she made to her father to remain sexually pure for her wedding night. If at any time she may be tempted to have sex before marriage, she would take a look at this ring and remember the pledge she made. Not to say, that it will always work. Some girls will have sex regardless of a pledge - but in most cases it does work. I have seen the wonderful effects of such a committment a young girl/boy has made to their parent.

I may not have done it at a ball, but I did tell my dad I wouldn't...five months later I did at the age of 16 ( I am now 24). When kids start fooling around and dating, all that goes out the window! It sounds like dad's trying to remain in control...I bet most of those girls have no intention of it, something to keep daddy happy.

I also think if its real theres no need or desire to declare it publically.

I think it's wierd, what if she doesn't marry until later in life ? She still has to hold a promise to remain a virgin to her "daddy" even when she is like 35 ? It's sounds o.k. as a private discussion between a father and daughter when she is young but not to announce it to the world.

I think in some instances, it's a good thing. It's like with me, if I make a promise to myself, I usually end up breaking it. But if I tell someone and have them help me to keep that promise, I usually am able to keep it, no matter what the circumstances. It's good to have someone holding you accountable for your actions! It keeps you in line and doesn't allow you to ruin your life, I mean, the purpose of sex is to create a baby! If you're not ready to support a child, why do anything? And when you have someone else confirming that for you, it makes things a lot easier. :D

I agree with you. I would feel uncomfortable announcing to the world the status os my virginity. This is not something that I want to share with anyone.I feel that it is my business and my business alone.

This sounds like the Jessica Simpson-complex...a bit creepy to talk about that with your father!
