If you are talking about stuff in the can........flour, vege mash, corn, fat and meat products you won't find on the counter.....ears,eyes,lips,tails,hoofs,gizzards,arses, fins-(fish parts). Once it is all ground up in a blender, it is a meat of sorts(Spam). It still came off the inspected animal fit for human consumption. Horses(yes they are eaten too, goats, pigs, chicken all go into this mix provided they are not diseased(strict food inspection controls remain in force because it is a food item and there is no control on weather a human would eat it...and many do)
Besides, food inspection is food inspection. If it is sickly, the animal is destroyed to keep it out of the food chain. Using sick animals for dog food is a farce. The animals are cremated.
For dried dog food, well that is going to be some kind of mix of colored flour dough with corn, rice, sweetner, meat to a lesser degree than the canned stuff.otherwise it would rot in the bag. Just enough to keep the animal interested. Milk products too.
Before you get grossed out, let me put a fancy French or Chinese name in place of these names and charge a higher price and call it a delacacy only the rich could afford to eat. (Never said the rich were smart)
Actually, if you ever took a tour in a factory that made dog food you would be impressed at how clean it is. For not only does that factory make dog food, but the next day the machines may have to process people foods.
Those semi's that go down the highway with the big chrome tanks that hold liquids. One month it could be milk, the next month it will be juice or something else. The tanks are washed out.....they are just "container tanks".
Factory is the same thing.

It depends on the brand. Most commercial dog foods are made of meat by-products/ meat and bone or grain by-products. Less expensive ones are generally made with less meat & more animal by-products & grain fillers. Most expensive dog foods may be made of ingred. suitable for human consumption ( that tells U something). Reading the label will help, but you really have to know what U are looking for. Get onto a website about the basics of dog nutrition. Good luck.

If you buy a low quality food, (Purina, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Ol'roy etc) It could be made of all sorts of nasty stuff. Like euthanized animals, animals that were diseased, animals unfit for unhuman consumption, moldy corn. Preservatives such as BHT and BHA that have been linked to cancer.
If you buy a high quality food (Innova, Cannidae, Wellness etc) the food will be made of human grade ingredients. Chicken, turkey, lamb, carrots, little in the way of fillers (i.e. corn, soy) that really offer no nutrition to dogs.

Chicken Soup for The Pet Lovers Soul is a great dog food brand. It came highly recomened by our vet. The ingredient list is pretty impressive. The website is their name .com.
They have a puppy formula, adult formula, and a senior formula. They also have a separate formula for large breeds.
There is also cat/kitten formulas.
Before you buy any brand you should read the labels and ingredient list.
Good luck!

Turn over the bag and read the list of ingerdients in the order that they are in is exactly what is in your dogs food.
If you see ground yellow corn listed first you are feeding a cheap dog food and there are better products out there.

Depends on which brand of food you are feeding. All dog foods have ingredient labels. If you're interested in learning what some of those by-products are really composed of, I suggest http://www.dogfoodproject.com/

I have always heard horse meat. I sure hope not. I know dogs are meat eaters and I hope the food is made of cows and pigs. I can't wait to see what the final answer is.

Hill's Science Diet is NOT a low quality food which is why MOST Vets recommend/prescribe it....and yes, it is comprised of vitamins, minerals, animal by products.
