1. Decide what is really important to you and give priority to that.
2. At least once a day, practice saying 'no' to someone or something that wants your time or attention. (e.g. TV ads, friends who want favors, family members who think you OWE them something, the phone ringing - let the voice mail get it)
3. Use this affirmation: everything that really has to get done today will get done today. There is always enough time. The universe is eternal. (and things like that, to get you off worrying about deadlines).
4. Make a SMALL To Do List that you can comfortably do each day. Practice making the list smaller until you feel very confident that everything on it can get done.
5. When you worry about people's opinions, ask yourself: does this person pay my bills? Does this person get to decide my life? You'll find that usually they don't, so why worry about their opinion?
6. Finally, remember that you are an essential part of the universe, and that this universe supports you all the way (YOU, that is, not other people's opinions of you). You have a right to be here, and in some way, each part of your personality in turn supports the greater events of this unfolding universe. You are the perfect YOU - nobody else could be a better YOU than you are.

how can you control stress? or your reaction to stress?

break down or identify why you feel stressed? Do you have any control over changing the situation that stresses you? Do you have to stay in that situation? Is this an 'in general' thing where you feel stressed all the time? Do you have a way to 'let off steam', like exercise or interests (hobbies can keep you sane), soothing music?

^^ it's true mediation does work and is cheaper than a doctor. Although, the doctor will probably suggest meditation too.
A ton of reading material availabe re: meditation.

But speaking with your doctor, may be helpful. A relative of mine felt "stressed" all time, only to find out on a routine health checkup that he actually had a slight blood pressure problem, that was easily remedied. Made a world of difference for him. Sometimes the feeling of being stressed is a symptom of illness.

or call your Employee Assistance Program (toll-free number, offered through an employer, if you have a job...most companies have an EAP or EAR program and it's totally confidential and free) for information and counseling (the initial phone call could give a non-judgemental ear to listen to you and help you make sort through things and suggest some solutions).

or dailing 211, United Way's Phone Number can get you a hookup with resources in your community, like groups, or counseling (even free or income-based), and people who could give you basic information.

The effects of stress can lead to both physical and mental sickness. It's great that you're taking a step to get some help. "It" can get better.

Hope this long winded answer didn't stress you out;)

First of all you need to stop thinking about being stressed...this alone will cause more stress than anything else. Meditation can help a lot....regardless of which of the many forms you choose to do. Set aside time where you can sit down, read your favorite book or do a quiet hobby. Make sure you are getting enough SLEEP. Your diet can impact stress levels as well, eating healthy foods makes your body feel better...so your brain feels better. Being active can also help reduce stress...go for a jog or head to the local gym once a week.
